Researchers tracking adults over 60 found that people who regularly knitted, crocheted, or did similar handcraft activities had significantly lower rates of cognitive decline. In some cohorts, dementia risk dropped by nearly half compared to non-crafters.

Here is why it works. Knitting activates multiple brain regions simultaneously: motor coordination, pattern recognition, working memory, counting, and creative problem solving. All at once. It is essentially a full brain workout disguised as something calming.

The benefits compound over time. The longer you do it, the more cognitive reserve you build, which acts as a neurological buffer against the changes that lead to dementia.
