I've made it cozy and fall-ish in our little house by adding a few familiar autumn decorations here and there. I also recently found the cutest antique folding chair, which looks so perfect next to my antique sewing machine! Follow along in my latest YouTube video, linked below for FB and in my IG bio. 🍂🫖🍂

I've been wanting to compile a list of quick vintage sewing patterns, and so I tried an experiment to see how speedily this late 1940's skirt would come together. Could it make the list?

I chose a nice cotton canvas for this skirt, in navy blue, and didn't think to start my timer until after I got my pieces cut out. I filmed the rest of the process for my most recent YouTube video though, and since that adds time to any project, I think it evened out.

I also chose to add a self drafted side seam pocket, which adds a bit of time as well. Sticking to the pattern would definitely be quicker, but I've grown to really like pockets in my clothing.

I was able to finish everything but the hem in a span of 2 hrs and 10 mins, and then I needed to let the skirt hang for a couple of days so that all of the bias areas could settle.

When I was ready to hem the skirt, I measured and marked my hem, trimmed and pressed it, and then took it to my machine to top stitch it with a wavy decorative stitch pattern that's programmed into my machine.

I was finally able to stop my clock at about 3 hours--not bad! This skirt pattern will definitely make it to my "Quick Vintage Patterns" list!

Have you ever sewn an item from this pattern before?

I think I've heard of people using this technique before, or something like it, but this is my first time trying it out! Have you ever tried it?

Here are some photos from my recent YouTube video, where my sewing was inspired by some of the character Helen's outfits in the show All Creatures Great and Small.

I used Simplicity 8447 to sew the overalls out of some blue cotton canvas, and I decided to cut the pants pockets a bit larger than those in the pattern, squaring off the bottoms and adding two instead of one. I also added a touch of fun and femininity by working a small amount of free hand embroidery (from a vintage embroidery booklet) on the pockets' reverse facings.

I made the sweater out of cotton sweater-knit fabric from my stash. With both the fabric and a favorite reproduction sweater folded in half lengthwise, I laid the repro sweater over the fabric, aligning the folds. I then used it as a guide to cut my new sweater. Starting with the front, I cut the sleeves in one with the body, and when I got to the shoulder seam, I simply flipped the repro sweater over along the shoulder line to cut the back. This made for a simple sewing process of joining a whopping total of two seams, one at each side/underarm.

I then hemmed my sleeves, neckline and waist before crocheting a "ribbing" band for each. I did this by making a chain of coordinating crochet cotton as long as the height of my desired ribbing, and working several rows of single crochet into the back loop only of each stitch. I joined the ends of my bands with slip stitches, and sewed each to its corresponding location on my sweater, right sides together, with a narrow zigzag stitch.

I love how both of these items turned out, and I'm glad to have them in my wardrobe!

I had an evening to myself the other night, and decided to try out a recipe for stuffed green peppers, from my 1960's Dinner for Two cookbook. Cooking for one is not very easy when you're used to making larger quantities, so this book was great for ideas! I simply halved the recipe, and was all set.

My menu differed slightly from the one suggested in the book, but was still heavily inspired by recipes of the day:

Tomato Bouillon
Stuffed Green Pepper
Roasted Potato
Carrot and Cucumber Salad

Who else still cooks when they're the only person home to eat it?
