Abeadaday!
India has been known for millennia as “the land of beads.” For centuries millions of stone and glass beads have been made there and distributed through the trade routes around the world. These large, vintage, wound-glass beads are another example of the vast artistic expression that comes from the bead makers who call this place home.

These old clay pieces are used as beads, but they were originally produced for an alternative purpose. Known as spindle whorls, they were made to function as a fly-wheel on a long wooden spindle to maintain inertia while spinning raw fiber into twisted thread. This batch comes from South America and date back many centuries.

They were a source of currency in the ever expanding colonial trade networks as well as prestigious pieces of adornment for the social elites. This mixed strand shows some of the many varieties made using the lamp-work technique.

Calcification sets in on anything that sits in the ground for too long a time. It’s the beginning of the mineralization and decomposition process. These old glass beads came from a dig in China. They date back many centuries, yet still show the creative hand behind them. Now, with some renewed life, they are ready for a second round.

This multi-layered, chevron style, glass bead is of European origin no doubt. However, pinning its exact source can be tricky. Many beads were made by Italian artists under strict conditions by the government. This restrictive environment caused many to flee to other countries and continue their work. Over the centuries, beads like this were often made in smaller batches in the mountains of France and up into the Netherlands.

In Northern Africa, amber (Amazigh) has been highly prized for thousands of years. Believed to possess protective qualities, raw amber will give off a static charge when rubbed. This “magical” attribute added to its value. Large necklaces like this were often worn by woman, adding to their social status as a sign of wealth and a vital part of their dowry.

These small tubular chevron beads were made by stretching a hot bubble of layered glass out into a thin cane. After it cools, the cane is cut into various sizes and the bubble that was once the original form is now the hole in each bead. This method dates back centuries and allowed for increased production of various kinds of beads. Made by Italian glass makers, these have been circulating the market for many generations.

Abeadaday!
This big and bold necklace came out of an estate sale. It’s a bit eclectic, but the beads that were used are from various cultures and time periods. The large center shells come from the Philippines and were once part of an old tribal waist belt. The yellows are an early form of acrylic resin made to substitute amber and the reds are a dyed coral used in many Asian pieces.
