Can we all agree perfection is overrated?

In a world of AI, edited images and picture perfect content at our fingertips every day, I am noticing a collective longing for something more lived in.

I think we are all exhausted by the deluge of images that all look the same. We are longing for something different. I am calling it perfection fatigue.

A computer can make anything look great. It only takes a click or two and very little human skill.

But it takes human creativity and human skill and real life lived to make beauty feel tangible, to give it a story, and to give it soul.

In the interior design industry, I see a pivot toward photography that isn’t as perfect. I want to see the things real people live with. A mug on the table. Boots by the door. A pillow that isn’t perfectly fluffed. A dog laying on the rug by the fire.

As we design homes, we select materials that will age with beauty. Because age in a home (and in a human) is a sign of memories made, of wisdom acquired, of soul, of story.

I am delighted by a space with a little quirk, a little asymmetry, a little something unexpected.

I am so grateful to be creating art that is at the center of real life. The meals made in the kitchen. The dirty kids running in from outside and forgetting to slip off their shoes. The game nights around the table. The fading of the fabric where the light hits in the morning. The way the floor wears a little more along our most traveled paths through the house — marking our routines. The treasures we pick up on our travels that find their way to our shelves.

Perfection is overrated. It is anxiety inducing. It is an illusion. Embrace the soul, the progress, the imperfection. It is so much better that way.

Going a little off script here to share something that has been on my mind a lot lately.

I recorded this after I got myself into a project I didn’t have time for because I was panicked my house wouldn’t be “ready.” More on that debacle on Substack.

Here’s the root of it: We have the opportunity to welcome others in a way that says “there you are!” instead of a mindset that says “look at me!”

What if we wasted that opportunity because things aren’t perfect?

Let’s all agree not to do that. Shall we?

I started looking for an example of natural limestone flooring in our portfolio and then realized how often we use this material.

I just adore the look, feel and patina of natural limestone in a home.

We shared a limestone lookalike a couple of months ago that went viral, and there’s a time and a place for a ceramic or porcelain option, but nothing will ever truly replace the real thing. ✨
