Blaze Makoid has been practicing architecture and design since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1985.

Prior to establishing his own firm, he has worked for the internationally known design firms of Kallmann, McKinnell & Wood and the Hillier Group where he was the design director for their Philadelphia Office. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Architecture Magazine, Hamptons Cottages and Gardens and the Robb Report. His designs have been exhibited in New York City, Boston, and Phila

delphia. He has received numerous national and international design awards including The 2008 Long Island AIA Commendation for Outstanding Achievement in Residential Design, The Boston Society of Architects’ First Citation and the Philadelphia AIA Honor Award for Excellence.

Soundview | The dining room is centered around a circular table custom designed by Vincent Van Duysen for Molteni, anchoring the space with a sense of ceremony. Above, an oculus introduces soft daylight from above, creating a moment that feels almost celestial. The artwork by McGaughey was selected to subtly reference the koi pond positioned just outside the dining room reinforcing the relationship between interior and exterior. Handmade brick, used on the exterior, continues into the dining room walls, adding texture and continuity.

Soundview | A raw, cedar-scented bench by Riva1920 sits just off the glass entry, offering a place to pause and take in the view straight through the home to the bluff beyond. The piece feels both functional and sculptural, setting the tone for the material honesty and connection to landscape that carries throughout the house.

In the living room, wood siding from the exterior transitions inward, reinforcing the home’s material continuity. A custom upholstered sofa forms a soft perimeter, allowing a set of iconic Minotti Fynn chairs to take center stage as sculptural focal points. A notable work by Manolo Valdés rests on the coffee table, introducing an artful moment that feels collected.

Soundview | Perched atop a dramatic bluff overlooking Long Island Sound, this 6,370 S.F. residence was conceived as a quiet, horizontal gesture set against the vastness of water and sky. The clients, one of which works in the technology sector, placed a strong emphasis on automation which was seamlessly embedded within the architecture, allowing hand-finished materials and artisanal details to take precedence.

An emphasis on craftsmanship runs throughout the house, shaped in part by the family’s deep personal connection to the arts. There is a shared sensitivity to composition, materiality, and expression that informed many of the interior decisions. Art was never treated as an accessory, but as a foundational layer within the home.

The home’s position overlooking a protected reserve informed a palette drawn directly from the changing seasons. Warm woods, layered neutrals, and deeper tonal moments allow each room to feel most engaged when the interior environment echoes the colors beyond the glass.

Sag Harbor Bay | Clad in warm cedar shingles, the home’s forms are both contextual and modern recalling the vernacular traditions of the Hamptons while reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens. Craft, material, and landscape converge at Sag Harbor Bay to create a home that is at once bold and understated, sculptural in form, warm in expression, and profoundly rooted in place.

Meet Ryan Vanderhovel - Senior Associate | Technical Director

For over ten years, Ryan has contributed to the success of a number of projects like Shooting Star to Jule Pond II, Calf Creek and Sag Harbor Bay while wearing many hats. He’s collaborated on design work, built architectural models, assembled full sets of construction documents, and logged countless hours on site.

As, Technical Director, he’s dedicated to helping others develop their skills, draft quality drawings, and learn about construction. Even with this focus on production, Ryan honors his artistic background and Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan by lending a creative perspective to everything he touches.

The design responds to the site’s unique natural setting through a restrained contemporary language that emphasizes horizontality, transparency, and a deep connection to the surrounding environment.

Bridgehampton Compound | Set within the refined landscape of Bridgehampton, this expansive residential compound is conceived as a contemporary retreat that seamlessly blends architecture, landscape, and lifestyle. Mature trees, manicured lawns, and curated plantings frame the sequence of low-lying structures, establishing a private sanctuary within the flat terrain of the East End.

Jule Pond II - Inspired by a sculpture within the landscape, this project expresses two distinct identities. At the entrance, a dark brise soleil spans two stories and presents a unified façade, visually connecting the three wings of the sprawling house, which were intentionally arranged to reduce the scale.

Within the house, the same motifs reappear. Stairs break free of walls, dark contrasts with light, millwork mimics the rhythm of the exterior brise soleil, and finishes carry from inside out.
