We’re really happy to have picked up a few works by celebrated American modernist James V. Gilliland.

Gilliland was a longtime member of the Albany Artists Group, served as its president in the 1950s, and in 1956 helped co-found the Oakroom Artists in Schenectady. His work is associated with modernism and abstract figurative painting, and his paintings have become increasingly collected in recent years.

This one, titled Mardi-Gras, is particularly compelling — dense, layered brushwork with flashes of red, ochre, olive, charcoal, and cream. Signed and dated 1960, and finished in an artist-lathed frame.

Red can be tricky. Too much and it takes over a room. Get it right and it does exactly what you want it to do.

We liked this one for the variations within the red — rust, coral, pink and deeper burgundy — and the vertical passage through the center that breaks up the field of color.

The original lath frame finishes it perfectly.

We’ve learned that still lifes need to be a little special — something different. There are plenty out there, so we look for ones that have a point of view.

This one got us with the oversized blue-gray vessel, loose brushwork, and that yellow and orange ground. A traditional subject, but definitely not a traditional still life.

The cerused wood frame is a nice finish.

“Draw me like one of your French girls.”

I mean… tell me this pig isn’t posing.

It’s definitely an older painting, with stable surface cracking throughout and no identifiable paint loss. The craquelure, muted palette, and original frame all work together beautifully.

Growing up around New York City, my parents used to drag me to museums constantly. As a kid, there were a few paintings that completely captured my imagination — especially the Pointillist works.

I remember getting as close as I could and seeing what looked like thousands of individual pixels of color. Then you’d back up and suddenly there was a painting. Years later, when Magic Eye pictures became a thing, they reminded me of the same experience.

Digital before digital.

That’s probably why this 1962 oil immediately grabbed me. Up close, it’s a field of individual marks and color. Step back and the figures and entire scene start to emerge. This style just doesn’t come around very often, and at this scale it’s a real showstopper.

And speaking of museums, the stool in front — not for sale! — is a replica of the stool found in Tutankhamun’s tomb. I was a bit of an Egypt nut growing up. Still am.

Always been a fan of neoclassical themes, so this one was an easy yes.

Samuel Heller was a 20th-century American painter known for expressive figurative work, portraits, still lifes and landscapes. This 1960s oil has that theatrical, almost mythic quality we love — loose brushwork, a great teal ground, and figures that feel like they’ve wandered in from another era.

Loose vertical forms, translucent layers, and a palette of blues, lavender, sage, cream and soft gold.

Original vintage oil on canvas. Signed Becker on the stretcher, with remnants of gallery or exhibition labels on the back.

And yes, that’s our bedroom. With all the art we’ve been bringing home, we’re starting to run out of walls to photograph it on. Sorry, James Anthony Bearden boxes are nfs.

We may have to start borrowing walls from friends and neighbors.

Looking for that statement piece over the sofa? This may be it.

Signed and dated 1960, this Abstract Expressionist oil on canvas has wonderful scale, vivid color, and all the hallmarks of the period.

It remains in its original artist-made frame, finished with aluminum cladding around the perimeter—a presentation commonly seen on mid-century abstract paintings.
