BUCKS COUNTY BITS

In 1958, Victor & Mary Cote created Cote Flags in Morrisville to make, clean & repair flags. Now called Anthem Flags, they say: Never let the flag touch the ground. It should always be the highest flag on the pole. When hung at half staff for a national tragedy, passing of a government leader, or certain memorial holidays, it must first be raised to the top of the pole, then lowered to half with the process reversed to take it down. Hang only in daylight unless lit, & never in the rain.

BUCKS COUNTY BITS

Robert Morris lived in Summerseat, his home in Morrisville. He supported the Revolutionary War financially, housed General Washington before the Battle of Trenton, & signed the Declaration of Independence. He also thought that Morrisville should be the nation's capitol. Southerners wanted it closer to them, so a vote was taken. Morrisville missed out by only 2 votes

BUCKS COUNTY BITS

Anna & Harry Torbert left their jobs at Goodnoe Dairy in Newtown to start their own milk business. The family had an 1890s milk wagon that was different from most others of the time. With a low floor & a sliding glass door, it was easier to move the milk. The driver sat on a milk stool & the front window lowered to allow the horse's reins through. The interior was lined with metal to hold ice & keep the product cold.

BUCKS COUNTY BITS

Andrew Ellicott of Solebury was good at math, astronomy & engineering. In 1770, he helped build Ellicott City in Maryland, then surveyed for the Mason-Dixon Line, the Pa/Ohio border, & made a topographical map of Niagara Falls. He was tasked with creating the layout for the Territory of Columbia (Washington DC). Then he was hired to teach Meriwether Lewis how to survey, which came in quite handy on his expedition with William Clark.

BUCKS COUNTY BITS Anna Jarvis created Mother's Day in 1908 to honor all that our mothers do for us. Her mother's favorite flower was the white carnation, so that became a symbol. Many local churches (St. Thomas in Croydon, St. Michael in Levittown, St. Ann in Bristol) adopted the idea by selling or giving away carnations on Mother's Day. Pink was for living mothers, white for those that had already passed.

BUCKS COUNTY BITS

In 1922, the Harriman section was added to Bristol Borough. The police had to take a taxi for any calls in that area, because it was too far for the usual walking patrol. In 1926, they finally purchased a police car to make their jobs easier
