BUCKS COUNTY BITS

Daniel "Sip" Alexander was at the Battle of Gettysburg when his master took him along as a servant. Daniel escaped to the Union Army, where he met E.G. Harrison of Hulmeville. Bringing him home with him, Harrison asked where he was from, Daniel answered "ississippi" & was forever after known as Sip. He farmed, made jewelry, sold fishing gear, played the fiddle, built his own house, went to school & joined Grace Episcopal Church. When he died, a stained glass window was added to the church in his name.

BUCKS COUNTY BITSGreece had the Lyceum, with Socrates, Plato & Aristotle. Bucks County had the Dolington Lyceum (school), with a similar rigorous education. The town, originally Dolinton (after Peter Dolin), had only 3 houses in 1800. It quickly grew with William Taylor's store, John Headley's tailor shop, the Eli & Biggs coach factory, Seth Davis' blacksmith shop & John Bitting's wheelwright business. The town was known as an important business & literary center.

BUCKS COUNTY BITS

As Cayuga Iroquois, Fernando Gaston Longchamp's family protested the massacre at Wounded Knee, so they moved to France, where Gaston understudied with great artists like Monet, Matisse, Chagall & Renoir. As a teen, he painted with Picasso. Eventually, he moved back to this area, settling in Kintnersville, & painted, unknown, for 40 years. Upon his death, over 400 paintings were found in his home, & now they are recognized as masterpieces by Bucks County's own French Impressionist.

BUCKS COUNTY BITS

The Towne Theatre opened in Levittown in 1954, showing Marilyn Mom in "River Of No Return" for 35¢. Herbie The Love Bug visited the theatre in the '60s.
George Mest, the owner, tried to kill himself three times (unsuccessfully) after the theatre was robbed, his camera was stolen, & his house caught fire, all on the same day.
Ushers got all the popcorn they could eat while they were working.

BUCKS COUNTY BITS

During Prohibition, Coast Guard patrol boats hunted rum-runners on the Delaware River. They hid in Bristol's docks & coves, & along the canal. Smugglers, traveling at night with their lights off, tried to unload before federal agents could intercept them. If they made it to land, they would find a blockade on the King's Highway.
