Today would be James, my husband’s 70th birthday. As we continue to miss him everyday since his passing, I’m constantly reminded through pictures and memories how grateful I am for the life we shared together. We both had loving families we came from, raised two of my favorite people and we traveled to some pretty amazing and beautiful places together.
It is with different tears, I had the joy to welcome in my 2nd grandbaby born in Jordan last Wednesday. The sheer delight of being able to shout, “It’s a girl!” brought gladness to our souls. She is scrumptious and sweet and her rambunctious big 2 year old brother is now getting to share center stage! So grateful to spend the month with them here. The weather is turning as it is at home. Temps coming down and still amazing mornings and evenings here in the desert and the view doesn’t get any better inside or out! Hope this finds each and everyone of you well! Much love ❤️

We boarded our motorcoach to Eguisheim where we started out our morning’s hike thru the forest to the three castles. This location offered a magnificent panoramic view over the Alsace plains. Eguisheim was selected the most beautiful village in France, and after seeing and walking the village, we all agreed they had made the right decision! After lunch we boarded our motorcoach to Zurich where we checked in for our last night and boarded our respective flights for home. What an adventure and what a pleasure it has been to bring you along. Thanks for trekking with us thru Austria, Germany and France. Road Scholar does not disappoint and our group included people who had done anywhere from 3–13 trips. So fun to talk over dinner each night of their travels and adventures. We will definitely be planning our next! Until then…❤️

I know I totally overuse the word amazing for the description of each day but it truly was another amazing day. This morning after breakfast we made our way to the Chateau Haut-Koenigsbourg. Built in the 12th century, the castle has witnessed eight centuries of European conflicts and rivalries between lords, kings, countries and emperors. On the signing of the treaty of Versailles in 1919, the castle was finally handed back over to the French government and given the status of national Palace. Today the Château gives a remarkable picture of what life was like in a fortress built in 1187, destroyed and rebuilt, destroyed once again 8 years later and rebuilt. The only castle in Alsace that was rebuilt to its original status. From its square dungeon, to the top of its fortress, we admired the area of the Alsace plains in every direction. After lunch at a restaurant in Turckheim we made our way past a local winery processing plant to hike through the region of vineyards as far as the eye could see. We experienced some of the local wines firsthand during a wine testing as we set foot back to our hotel for our farewell dinner. One more day in the region and then we will be making our way back to Zürich for our flights out on Friday.

Another full day in France as our morning train took us into the charming historical center of Colmar. We had a local expert for a guided tour throughout the “little Venice” quarter which actually happens to have one of the largest pedestrian zones in Europe and countless treasures from the middle ages to the 20th century. Our walk concluded at the exquisite Bartholdi museum. He was the French painter and sculptor who designed our Statue of Liberty! Lunch was on our own as we explored more of Colmar, sampling its delicious pastries, found a delicious vegan spot to eat (which is a miracle in the land of butter, cream and cheese!) then took a train back to the charming village of Turckheim exploring its local shops and most amazing architecture. Until tomorrow…au revoir!❤️

Bonjour! This morning we boarded our motorcoach for Le Linge, a French battlefield where a major conflict of World War I took place. Upon arrival, we took a walk around the battlefield as we learned more about the context during which this conflict took place. We had the opportunity to visit the Le Linge memorial museum where we found French and German relics found on site. We walked through both German and French cemeteries, trenches and battle sites. It’s always a very sobering time to walk where so many men fought and lost their lives. There is a memorial that sits high on a hill in Turckheim where an American flag has been flying since the end of the WWII in gratefulness for all America did in helping them secure their freedom. After lunch we set out on foot to the Ballons des Vosges, a protected area of woodlands, pastures, wetlands, farmlands and local communities. It was a full day. It’s now almost 10pm so I shall bid you “bonne nuit.” ❤️

Rounding out Day 7, we checked out of our lovely hotel in Germany and began out walking tour of Freiburg with our lovely local guide, Sabrina. The capital of the Black Forest has been a university town since 1457 when the school was founded. The town was largely destroyed in 1944 but no modern buildings have been allowed to be constructed due to the mandate against modern architecture. Boarding our motorcoach on our way to the Alsace region of France, we stopped at the Badberg Nature Reserve hiking through its vineyards. Leaving there we said goodbye to Germany and crossed over into France where we checked into our lovely hotel in Turkheim. We felt as if we had arrived on the set of Beauty and the Beast! See ya tomorrow!

Another great day for the books! This morning we took a walk to board a train to Hinterzarten, where we began today’s walking field trip along the Heimatpfad, a high black forest path that led us along the Loffel Creek, bringing us to Hollsteg. Imagine being on a hike through the black forest accompanied by a local guide that is a botanist?! Pure heaven! The identifications that we made for plants, trees, and getting the history of why the Black forest is called the Black Forest made for a splendid day, indeed, as we boarded our train back in to Freiburg for a tour of the amazing cathedral located in the center of the city. When everything else was bombed and destroyed in the war, this 13th century cathedral was left standing! That’s a pure miracle for a purely magnificent cathedral.
Oh, and as long as I was in Germany, I figured I’d go ahead and pick up a cute little convertible classic Mercedes! Tomorrow is our last day in Germany as we will begin our trek into France. See ya there!

Checking out of our hotel this morning, we made our way to the Black Forest with a stop to visit the breathtaking Rhine Falls-fed by the Rhine River, the largest waterfall in Europe, gushing water pouring over the cliff at 158,000 gallons per second! And yes we were in a tour boat just like that! We continued on to Stein am Rhine, Switzerland for a walk through the town center and lunch. From there we transferred to Freiburg, Germany for check in, dinner and an evening walk around the city. All cameras on deck for the amazing architecture!

This morning our day started on foot from the hotel to the Quelltuff Gorge. It was an incredible hike down into the gorge passing tufa formations and spectacular colors. We finished the hike at the Bregenzerwald Kasekeller (cheese cellar) where we learned about the history and origins of the making and the factory. We got a front row seat as we looked into the glass wall into Europe’s largest maturing center for mountain and alpine cheeses. The cellar holds 52,000 sixty pound cheese discs!! Leaving there we headed to the Metzler Farm where they process both cow and goat milk for cheeses and cosmetics. It was so fun! From there we boarded a cable car that took us to the mountain summit of Baumgarten (elevation 5577’) where we enjoyed the gorgeous views of the countryside, the foothills of the Alps and the beautiful Lake Constance. Spectacular panoramic view! We took the cable car down to Bezau where we leisurely walked toward the town center following the Dorfbach River at our side. Back to the hotel for dinner and preparations to check out in the morning and head to Germany. See ya there! (P.S. the haze we’ve been told is due to the fires in Canada making its way to the Austrian airs😢)

Well it’s been awhile! I’ve been busy since the store closed at the end of September last year. I took over my husband’s medical equipment business, completed all classroom requirements for the Tulsa Master Gardener program and have been actively involved in all the amazing committees required for my intern hours. I have loved every minute and have grown into an even greater appreciation for this wonderful creation God has left for us to tend. And I have been in a master gardener’s heaven as I now find myself hiking through Austria, Germany and France, visiting farms, forests and castles. After flying into Zurich this last Monday, along with 19 other fellow hikers, we made our way to Lingenau, Austria where our day hikes have taken us to the alpine region of Bregenzerwald. We have had the privilege of engaging in the slowness of life as we observe farmers moving cattle from the lower region to graze in the mountains for the summer while the lower fields are cut and dried for the grass needed to feed their stock throughout the winter. These milk cows provide the cheese makers farm fresh milk for the processing of the cheese.
We saw stunning flora and fauna in the Nagelfluhkette National Park, home to the protected Apollo Butterfly. The shades of green in the meadows, groves and bogs along with the amazing array of wildflowers at every turn are so hard to describe and the pictures hardly do it justice. We hiked over the Austrian border into Germany and back to Austria seeing once again the gentle hills, vast plains, valleys and peaks. We finished up the day strolling through the enchanting village of Schwarzenberg before heading home. My feet are tired but my heart is full. Hope you can enjoy this adventure with me. See you tomorrow ❤️
