People often tell me, “It must be so fun getting to play with flowers all day.”
And yes, there is so much beauty and creativity in what I do. But professional floristry is so much more than playing with flowers.
It’s scrubbing buckets, hauling heavy loads, broken nails, sliced fingers, wet and stained clothes, early mornings and long days on my feet. Having clients who value the hard work while having the emotional capacity to maintain respect with those who are not kind and do not value our work.
It’s countless hours away from my own friends and family and weekends spent making someone else’s celebration a priority.
Behind the flowers, I’m also running a business: managing a staff, doing payroll, staying compliant with state laws, keeping our social media and online store current, maintaining the physical shop (selling, decorating, cleaning, organizing) and constantly communicating with clients throughout the day to understand exactly what they uniquely desire.
And it isn’t always celebrations.
Sometimes, like in this photo, I’m creating flowers for a family walking through one of the most heartbreaking moments of their lives.
That’s why this work is about so much more than being creative. It takes skill, discipline, physical labor, business knowledge, professionalism and integrity.
Behind every arrangement is someone’s story, someone’s celebration, milestone, or goodbye.
It isn’t always glamorous. But it is meaningful.
And I consider it an honor to serve people through flowers in every season of life.
