The home is shaped around gathering, both indoors and out—continuing a legacy of hospitality that has defined the adobe since its earliest days.
From the beginning, the intention was to create a place that could hold everything from large communal meals to quieter, more private moments. Within walls that have witnessed generations—moments of tension, ceremony, and daily life—the architecture now supports a renewed rhythm of coming together.
Spaces open outward into courtyards and gardens, where boundaries between inside and outside dissolve. The addition creates a backdrop for outdoor living, while the original adobe anchors the experience with intimacy and enclosure, its presence grounding every interaction.
There is a deliberate balance between expansive and contained. Long tables and open terraces invite gathering, while smaller rooms, shaded walkways, and tucked-away corners offer retreat. The home moves fluidly between these conditions—gathering, lingering, dispersing—always returning to a shared center.

The interiors take their cues from the adobe itself; quiet, pared back, and almost monastic in their restraint—an approach that reflects not only the architecture, but the weight of its history.
Within walls that have held nearly two centuries of lives and events, the design resists excess. With so little added, every element carries weight. Furnishings and lighting were selected with precision—low, tactile, and grounded—allowing the architecture and its patina to remain the focus while still offering warmth and comfort.
Lighting plays a central role. Rather than relying on overhead fixtures, spaces are shaped by softer, ambient sources—lamps, sconces, and candlelight—echoing the quiet rhythms the home has long held. The atmosphere shifts throughout the day, creating interiors that feel minimal yet deeply livable.
The result is a home that supports both retreat and gathering, where each object contributes to a sense of intimacy and continuity, in dialogue with the adobe’s enduring presence.

We are very pleased to share our design for a historic adobe home in Sonoma, CA, now featured on . Designed for and with our friend , the property is a balance of history and contemporary form.
The landmarked structure, miles from Andrew Mariani’s Scribe Winery, called for an intentional restoration. The goal was not reinvention, but preservation—maintaining its warm, hospitable nature. Thick plaster walls, deep-set openings, and irregular edges remain intact, allowing the passage of time to be felt. Originally Raised in 1847 by H.A. Green, this small adobe has witnessed nearly two centuries of California’s shifting landscape—politics and prisoners, rebellion and marriage.
Working within preservation constraints, the original structure could not be altered or conventionally expanded. Instead, a new volume by Robert Baumann Architects sits apart, connected only by a single structural beam aligned with a skylight—a quiet threshold between past and present. The result is a home that remains fully itself, its history uninterrupted.
We’d like to thank Andrew for the trust and collaboration, with gracious words by and beautiful images by .

Inside the Rounds , the plan unfolds radially—organized around a central gathering space that anchors each cabin. Living, sleeping, and bathing zones orbit this core, creating a sense of balance and continuity as guests move through the room. Curved banquettes, built-in furniture, and custom millwork reinforce the geometry, encouraging both conversation and quiet retreat.

Materials are warm and restrained: pale woods, soft upholstery, and subtle textures that echo the surrounding forest. The result is an interior that feels both intentional and intuitive-designed to be experienced slowly, with no single moment competing for attention.

The architecture of the Rounds is defined as much by structure as by atmosphere. Framing radiates outward from a central oculus, drawing light deep into the space and emphasizing the circular form from within. This structural clarity informed every aspect of the interior—from furniture placement to ceiling height—creating rooms that feel cohesive, calm, and quietly expressive.

Rather than relying on ornament, the design allows proportion, repetition, and material honesty to shape the experience. It’s an approach rooted in craft and restraint, where the details reveal themselves over time.

The Rounds at reimagine the traditional cabin as a series of freestanding retreats, shaped by geometry, landscape, and season.

Each structure is conceived as a quiet object in the Catskills- compact, grounded, and oriented inward. The circular form softens the relationship between building and site, allowing the cabins to settle gently into their surroundings while maintaining a sense of privacy and separation.

Clad in natural materials and capped with faceted roofs, the Rounds shift with light and weather, reading differently across the year. Together, they form a small constellation designed for rest, reflection, and immersion in place.

opened this earlier year at in Union Square. Being inside the hotel means the restaurant needs to service guests at all times of day. We designed three distinctive spaces. Here’s a look at the first space, a moody entry bar and lounge.

Just beyond the hotel lobby lies the grand burled bar and entry lounge. Here, you mix and mingle: it’s relaxed, refined and full of special details that reward the observant eye.

Zaf’s is a progressive experience, with a welcoming atrium at its center. Marble topped tables, caned chairs, and an antique fireplace sourced from a European chateau make this space an ideal meeting space day or night.

The identity at is an ode to the space’s push and pull between past and present. The main logo pairs two distinct typographies: Café rendered in a delicate, classic script that recalls the charm of old European establishments, and Zaffri set in a bold, modern type that grounds the brand in a contemporary New York world. Together, they form a dialogue of eras—grace meeting precision.

The palette extends this duality through a spectrum of reds: deep oxbloods, carmine, and vermilion layered against warm creams and glazes of silver, creating a color story that feels rich and electric. Every detail is designed to seduce the senses: the gleam of a silver edge, the opulence of a tassel, the flicker of candlelight on a lacquered surface.

Café Zaffri lives in these textures—an identity that feels lived-in, indulgent, and entirely alive.
