Today, Alex Crowder will have the privilege of sharing the stage with David Haskell at The Battery Gardeners Luncheon, following David’s lecture on How Flowers Made Our World. It’s the start of our new partnership with The Battery, a park that has been a fort, an immigration station and a concert hall. Today it’s 25 waterfront acres of perennial gardens, woodland and an urban farm at the tip of Manhattan.

“One massive stone.” That’s how Piet Oudolf described The Battery before he began planting it. Where there was once hard, grey edge at the tip of Manhattan, there’s now a garden that never really stops moving: alliums in early summer giving way to grasses and goatsbeard, drifts of scabiosa by the water, and seedheads that hold their shape through winter against the harbor. Nothing is planted for a single moment of bloom. That way of thinking shaped how we work as a studio. Oudolf taught us to design for the whole year, to let form carry a space when flowers fade, and to treat decay as part of the beauty instead of something to hide.

In early modern herbals, Hellebores were described as a plant whose presence signaled threshold spaces. It was believed to ward off malevolent spirits, acting as a kind of petaled guardian. Sunflowers past their peak, heads heavy and petals removed, stay in good company with goldenrod and crabapple, with piles of tomatoes still on the vine.

Naturalia at Demisch Danant. Tiger lilies, teasel and foxtail, all gathered within 200 miles, held in vessels of grasses and sedges, woven, layered and left to fade on their own time. Whitman called grass “the beautiful uncut hair of graves.” We just made vases out of it.

A few seats remain for our wreath-making workshop at TOAST West Village taking place this Saturday, October 3rd between noon and 2pm. Link in bio to reserve.

Alex will be working with the stems of a city already turning: the same foxtail and grasses that stood green all summer have gone to seed, gold, and brittle. Milkweed pods split open. These beautiful stems ensure their abundance next year by turning their summer outfits into hundreds, sometimes thousands of seeds which they will disperse over the coming months. Coming just after the autumn equinox, the work moves at the same pace the year does, toward the slowdown, the gathering-in, the cooler months ahead.
