Shugei Craft

Shugei Craft Craft supplies from Japan, including fabric, thread, yarn, and supplies for traditional Japanese arts and crafts And so Shugei Craft was born!

Our mission is to make high quality craft materials from Japan more accessible to the artists and crafters of the world, no matter where they live or what language(s) they speak. In doing so, we also hope to increase awareness of the many wonderful traditional crafting techniques found throughout Japan. Shugei (pronounced shoo-geh) is a Japanese word meaning handicraft. It is written in Japanese a

s 手芸, combining the character for hand (手) with the character for technique (芸). Shugei Craft began when Jess opened a small handmade purse shop on Etsy in 2011 under the name Nekomata Textiles. The purses were made from recycled clothing on the outside and unique fabric on the inside. More often than not, the interior fabrics Jess used were from Japan, and she soon realized that what she enjoyed most was searching out and collecting cool Japanese fabric - even more than making the purses themselves.

Our Story

My mission with Shugei Craft is to make the amazing variety of beautiful, high quality crafting supplies from Japan more accessible to the artists and crafters of the world, no matter where they live or what language(s) they speak.

My husband and I have always loved Japan. The culture, the language, the landscape - it's all so unique and amazing that we keep returning over and over again. And as an artist and creative type, I've personally always been fascinated by the really strong crafting culture.

Shugei Craft began when I opened a small handmade purse shop on Etsy in 2011 under the name Nekomata Textiles. My purses were made from recycled clothing on the outside and beautiful, unique fabric on the inside. More often than not, the interior fabrics I used were from Japan, and I soon came to the realization that what I really enjoyed was searching out and collecting cool Japanese fabrics - maybe even more than making the purses themselves. And so Shugei Craft was born at the intersection of all my loves - Japan, crafting, and collecting beautiful things.

Over the years I’ve expanded both my web presence (although you can still find me on Etsy) and my product offerings. I currently carry small, carefully curated selection of Japanese fabrics, masking tapes, and embroidery supplies from popular Japanese brands like nani IRO, KOKKA, Cosmo, Shinzi Katoh, Lecien, and more.
