transforming a tree log into a 40ft bar top was one of most complicated, educational, and deeply satisfying parts of making recess grove

the wood came from an ash tree grown on a farm upstate that we selected as a massive snow-covered log. we had it milled and kiln dried before we cut, carved, braced, mounted, patched, planed and sculpted every slab using hand tools into a beautiful bar top

‘the counter’ is the first thing you see when you walk into our space, and the curved shape is designed to encourage people to gather around and connect across its expansive wood surface

the stunning wood grain and carved edges are meant to be felt by hand

come by to see how the counter has gracefully patina’d over the last 2 years of paint and colored pencils

we’re open 7 days a week, and the counter cafe area is always free to walk in, hang out and create something with your hands ✨

Realize your dark academia dreams and discover the wonders of drawing in pen and ink

In this beginner-friendly class, you will learn how to handle and care for nib pens, create striking black & white line drawings with India ink, and fall in love with an art form that remains popular over the centuries.

Now used primarily by comic artists, pen drawing has been around for millennia evolving from reed pens in ancient Egypt to the modern day ball point.

India ink remains popular since its invention in ancient times due to its versatility, light-fastness and water resistance, making it perfect for beginners and advanced users alike.

Monday, September 28, 7-9pm

Hosted by local artist Ciara Halligan

All materials will be provided! No prior experience needed!
