We’re not perfect, but we’re always honest. 🛠️

On this flat EPDM membrane roof, a tiny metal shard from the roofing crew managed to puncture the surface. It’s a small detail, but catching and patching these before the job is finished is what separates good work from great work.

Lesson learned: Always protect your working surface—lay down plywood when other trades are working overhead to prevent costly little mistakes!

Stay tuned for the next handful of days! We’re building a new metal roof on this property with Old Century Roof 🔨
Today was delivery day, and we did find a few little surprises that we had to tackle before we begin the install process! 🏠
Hopefully the rain holds off tomorrow so we can begin the journey of transforming this mansard roof into a centerpiece for the neighborhood!

Fast vs. Right: How to Avoid Squeaky Floors 🔇

Ever walked through a home and heard every single footstep squeak? That’s usually the result of doing things the fast way instead of the right way. 
When installing a subfloor, many builders take shortcuts—dropping the panel down, shooting it with a nail gun, and calling it a day. But over time, nails loosen, wood shifts, and you’re left with annoying, noisy floors. 
At Bunn & Sons Custom Builders, we do things differently: 
1. Glue: We lay down a thick bead of heavy-duty subfloor adhesive along every single joist before setting the panel. 
2. Screw: Instead of fast-shooting nails, we use subfloor screws. Screws hold significantly tighter, won’t back out over time, and keep the subfloor locked in place forever. 
Does it take a little extra time and investment? Absolutely. But eliminating squeaks for life? Priceless.

Ever wondered why even solid concrete slabs start cracking over time? 
The culprit is often right under your feet: expansive clay soils. When these clay soils absorb moisture, they expand and push upward against the concrete. Without a structural footing or caisson underneath, the rigid slab has to give somewhere—resulting in stress cracks right down the middle of patios, driveways, and non-structural basement floors.

Ever wondered how brick walls actually stay attached to a home? 🧱👇
It looks like solid masonry, but a brick facade isn’t structural on its own! It relies on two key things:
Brick Ledge: A concrete extension of the foundation wall that carries the physical weight of the stacked bricks.
Brick Ties: Bent pieces of thin-gauge metal screwed directly into the exterior wall framing and layered between courses of mortar to keep the entire facade anchored flush against the house over time.
Without these small metal ties, exterior brick walls could pull away from the structure over time!
