Or you can design a kitchen around the way you actually live.

There’s a difference.

At Stone & Grain, our Wildgrass project in Broomfield, Colorado, the goal was never simply to create a beautiful custom kitchen. It was to create a kitchen that works intuitively for the family who lives there.

Where are the morning traffic jams?

Where do the evening messes happen?

Where do the dishes pile up?

What stays on the countertop because there was never a better place designed for it?

Those are the details we want to know.

In Stone & Grain, that thinking led to custom cabinetry with integrated cut-outs for a concealed drying rack — a small, highly considered detail that gives wet dishes a dedicated place to drain and dry without taking over valuable countertop space.

It may not be the detail you pin first on Pinterest.

But it may be one of the details you appreciate most every single day.

That is the difference between collecting inspiration and working with a professional kitchen designer who studies the way you actually live.

Beautiful cabinetry means very little if it doesn’t actually support the way you live.

For this custom home remodel, we spent just as much time thinking through floorplanning, storage, appliance placement, and daily function as we did selecting the materials and finishes.

Because if the storage isn’t right, the entire design is useless.

This kitchen was refined around real life—plenty of room for his and hers storage, thoughtful drawer and cabinet planning, and small appliances tucked away so the countertops can stay clean and intentional.

Then came the layers that make the space feel like them: warm wood tones, tailored cabinetry, natural stone, mixed materials, and carefully considered finish selections that connect this room to the architecture of the home.

That is the difference between simply choosing pretty things and designing a space from the inside out.

For us, custom home and remodel interior design starts with understanding how the room needs to function, then developing the floorplan, cabinetry, storage, lighting, materials, and finishes around that life.

The perfect powder bath is all about the details—and in a new construction home, these smaller spaces are where thoughtful finish selections can make such an impact.

This Phillip Jeffries plaid wallpaper brings a tailored, almost equestrian feeling to the room—classic, handsome, and beautifully layered.

Then we paired it with this sculptural, futuristic wall sconce, creating that tension we love in design: two completely different eras somehow aligning perfectly.

Traditional pattern. Contemporary lighting. Carefully considered plumbing, millwork, finishes and materials—all working together as part of the larger vision for the home.

That is one of our favorite parts of new construction interior design: making hundreds of individual selections feel intentional and connected, while still creating those unexpected moments that give a custom home its personality.

A powder bath may be one of the smallest rooms in the house, but it’s one of the best places to make a statement.

Millwork is so much of what we design—and this space is a perfect example of how custom design can reflect who our clients actually are.
It looks simple- but it's not your average design and implementation - and this is how we bring the magic 🪄✨
He works around the clock in the oil industry. She’s high fashion. He’s a cowboy. Together, they have this incredible mix of polish, personality, and just enough swagger—and we wanted this room to capture all of it.

At its core, this is his second office. His desk needed to be beautiful enough to live inside a wh***ey lounge, but completely functional so that at any moment, he can sit down, open his computer, and handle… well, oil things.

On the right, we leaned into his more playful side with a custom bar—because when work is done, this room shifts beautifully into a place for wh***ey, conversation, and hosting.

And because the room itself is more intimate, we used mirrored details within the millwork to reflect the window behind him, bounce light through the space, and give the cabinetry a little more depth and dimension.

It’s tailored. A little Western (you’ll see that in more photos!)

A little fashion house

A little gentleman’s club.

And very specifically theirs.

A cool Scandinavian sensibility—with just enough traditional influence to give it soul.

This kitchen is really a study in wood, stone, shape and restraint. We used warm wood cabinetry almost architecturally, taking it all the way to the ceiling and integrating the appliances so they disappear into the composition rather than interrupt it.

Then we started playing with the details.

The oversized concrete pendants bring in an unexpected, almost sculptural material against all that beautiful grain. A cherry inlay wraps the edge of the stone island countertop, adding warmth and emphasizing its long horizontal line. Brass hardware feels classic without becoming precious, while the cane-backed counter stools introduce another natural texture.

And one of my favorite moments is tucked off to the side: the rounded serving cabinet. We softened the cabinetry into a curve and topped the entire piece in cherry, creating a dedicated landing place for cocktails, w**e and serving when this family entertains. It’s functional, but it also becomes its own little piece of furniture.

Even the hood gets its own personality—dark, architectural and slightly traditional against an otherwise quiet palette.

That’s what I love about this kitchen. It doesn’t belong to one aesthetic.

It’s Scandinavian, traditional, organic and a little unexpected—all held together by the grain.

This is what I think of as my signature fireplace.

It looks simple and seamless—but it’s a surprisingly technical installation, and one that’s often underestimated. When it’s done correctly, though, all of that complexity disappears and you’re left with one clean architectural plane and a beautiful ribbon of fire.

For our Stone & Grain Project, we carried the cherry millwork into this room and repeated the curved end detail from the kitchen, creating a subtle connection between the spaces.

And this wall isn’t even the main focal point. Just beside it is nearly 16 feet of glass opening to beautiful landscaping, so the fireplace needed to complement the view, not compete with it.

And yes, there’s a big black television on a white wall. Some designers may be horrified—and maybe it won’t make Elle Decor.

But this is how people live.

Good design isn’t about pretending televisions, kids, movie nights and real life don’t exist. It’s about integrating them beautifully.

Mixed woods. Mixed metals. And just enough classic black to anchor it all.

This kitchen was designed around the way our clients actually live.

Our client hand washes dishes daily, but because the island is the star of the room, she didn’t want a drying rack sitting out in plain view. So we designed two custom vented cabinets into the island—one with a pull-out drying rack, and another for produce like potatoes, onions and garlic that doesn’t need refrigeration.

A deep single-basin workstation sink sits beneath a polished nickel Delta Trinsic Touch2O faucet, while vintage-inspired brass cabinet hardware adds warmth against the black island and surrounding walls of natural wood cabinetry.

And behind those beautiful cabinet fronts? A complete suite of Monogram appliances. Our clients went all the way with the full Monogram package, allowing us to integrate professional-grade performance without disrupting the warmth of the kitchen.

For us, custom kitchen design is about more than what a room looks like. It’s about understanding routines, storage habits and the way someone actually uses their home—and designing around that.

We’re revealing this one slowly…

Because some kitchens deserve more than one look.

For our Wildgrass project in Broomfield, we mixed white oak and cherry cabinetry against a Scandinavian-inspired backdrop, then softened all those clean lines with details that feel a little more traditional, a little more unexpected, and completely personal.

This glimpse is all about the island.

Instead of a standard flat end panel, we designed a curved, furniture-style termination in cherry, complete with wood inlay and picture-frame detailing that follows the radius of the surface.

That curve seems simple.

It isn’t.

Carrying traditional millwork detailing across a curved plane requires precision, craftsmanship, and a willingness to do something beyond the expected.

And that was really the point of this kitchen.

Clean, but not cold.
Traditional, but not predictable.
Scandinavian, but with a little attitude.

Something unique. Something YOU.

CHROME & GRAIN | The Art of the Details

A staircase doesn’t have to be something you simply pass through—it can become part of the architecture of the home.

For our Chrome & Grain Project, we designed this custom wood stairwell to feel as though it had always belonged here. The warm natural wood flows seamlessly into the new architectural columns, creating a continuous material story from floor to floor.

Custom black iron balusters bring in a tailored, graphic contrast, while the new stair runner adds warmth, softness and just enough pattern to balance the clean lines of the millwork. Even the smallest transitions were considered—from the wood caps and handrails to the way the columns visually anchor each level.

The result is a stairwell that feels substantial without feeling heavy: warm wood, blackened metal, soft textiles and beautiful natural light.

This is what we love about whole-home design. The architecture, finishes and furnishings aren’t separate decisions—they’re all part of the same story.

More revealed from our latest photoshoot—and I wish I could say it was all roses.

Being back in this space was emotional for me. I could still see the vision we created, but I could also see the places where the ex*****on fell short.

The clients chose to work with their own general contractor. From the beginning, I had concerns about whether the team had the experience required to execute several of the more detailed elements that were central to the design. Those concerns were informed by a previous collaboration, and I communicated them clearly to the project lead.

Unfortunately, the issues I anticipated were not fully addressed, and many of the same problems resurfaced during construction.

That experience reinforced something I already knew: a design is only as successful as its implementation. Beautiful drawings, thoughtful selections, and custom details still require consistent oversight in the field to ensure they are executed as intended.

This is why Phase II: Design Implementation is no longer optional for full-service renovation projects designed by our firm. We need to remain involved throughout construction to review details, identify concerns early, communicate with the trades, and help protect the client’s investment before small issues become permanent ones.
