Alright guys. It may be halfway through the week but in case you didn’t know…. IT’S SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST WEEK!! I’ve been a surgical tech for about a year and a half now and I cannot imagine doing anything else with my life. I have set up for emergency craniotomies, exploratory laparotomies, robotic surgeries, the list goes on. There’s just something about physically helping someone who needs it that is so exhilarating and fulfilling.
In case you don’t know what a surgical tech does, I set up the room and case for the surgery. I am right up next to the surgeon the whole time intraoperatively. I am the person who helps clean up after a case. I make sure that my patient is safe, advocated for, and cleaned up after surgery. We participate in time outs where the whole surgical team acknowledges the patients name, date of birth, procedure, and laterality (if applicable). We count sponges, sharps, and instruments twice-sometimes 3 times. We communicate with a room full of people who are there for you.
I seriously cannot imagine doing anything else with my life. I have never had a job that I enjoyed going to every single day except for this one. I love what I do.
