Greasy Creek General Store We are a small family business in Buffalo, MO. carrying items for spring, summer, fall, and winter. Everything we carry is locally home-grown and vine-ripened.

Our store has seasonal phases that rotate us through the whole year. We get started in early spring with bedding plants for the garden-growers. We carry a wide variety of vegetable plants, some melons, some berries, and herbs. We also carry flowers and hanging baskets, as well as lawn and patio cedar furniture that has been handcrafted right here in Buffalo. As soon as the gardens come on, we begi

n handling fresh, farm-grown, vine-ripened produce. Green beans are a main crop for us, and we've sold hundreds of pounds of them over the last few years. Other favorites are tomatoes, cucumbers, all kinds of squash and peppers, new potatoes, egg plant, and you name it. What we don't grow right here in our own gardens on Greasy Creek Hill, we get from the Mennonites of Lead Mine, MO. In addition to our produce line, we carry some basic grocery items. Milk is in the fridge; bread is on the counter; jams, jellies, honey, apple butter, and sorghum line the shelves. We also carry cookies and breads from the Lead Mine Mennonite bakery! Country, Primitive, and Rustic Home Décor is a big part of our General Store all year around, but especially during the fall and winter months when the gardens have died out. We carry a large line of bathroom and kitchen accents, high-quality Thompson wax crumbles, candles, LED flameless candles, wax warmers, candle holders & accessories, chicken wire and other country items, baskets, and a large line of Mason Jar items like soap dispensers, lights, lamps, containers, and many other gifts and goodies. You can also find anything from old-fashioned aprons to country grapevine wreaths to cast iron skillets to bird houses & feeders. In the fall we deck the place out with straw bales, pumpkins and gourds, corn stalks, and indoor decor. During the Christmas season we carry a large assortment of tree ornaments, snowmen, nativity sets, and other holiday decor. Over in our blacksmith shop, Josh Bush makes a variety of things like hooks, towel holders, ornamental pieces, and more. Since 2016, events and workshop classes have joined the ranks of what Greasy Creek General Store is all about. We host several large events throughout the year, and regularly have classes scheduled to teach interested students some of the dying arts of our heritage. Friday Evening Update (8/28):

Well, first of all I need to apologize for my ‘trusty’ weather app giving me some information that was incorrect this morning (at least it MAY have been, we’re not there yet!). After I checked the app again several hours later, it was changed to show somewhat higher temps into next week. Still not the highs that some are showing, but higher than it predicted this morning. We’ll just have to wait and see what really happens.

OK, now on with the news…
We got back from both auctions with lots of autumn produce like pumpkins, gourds, colored Indian corn, and more! We also picked up more of the hardy mums, as well as some Rudbeckias and Celosias in fall colors.

And of course, we have a huge baked goods order from the Leadmine bakery ready to go, as well as all of our late-summer produce! And don’t forget we have our meat freezer stocked up with all-natural ground beef, steaks, and other fine cuts of pasture-grazed, Hereford beef from the local McCorkill Family Farms. How about a grill-out tonight?!

Friday Morning Update (8/28):

Wow!... Four more days in this month and we begin the first of the “ember” months! How’d we get here already?!?

This is a very pleasant morning, with clear skies, 60º, and a balmy breeze out there! You just couldn’t ask for more this time of year. AND, the big news, as many of you have probably already found out, is that the ‘terrible heat prediction’ for next week has diminished down to pretty much what we’ve already been seeing. In fact, when I checked it this morning, I found that Thursday puts us back down into the high 80’s, with descending temps on the following days! By next Saturday, they’re now showing us in the mid 80’s. Now, just like it showed high heat earlier and then changed, we all know things can happen, but you gotta’ admit… it does look much more promising that it originally did!

Yesterday was a decent day again in the General Store, especially for a ‘back-to-school’ week (I have no idea what school has to do with vegetable consumption… but, whatever!). We are definitely seeing many autumn items moving now, including our new mums, fall décor, and even some of our new mini pumpkins & gourds. I was holding off purchasing any larger pumpkins and gourds, but with the revised weather ahead, I may reconsider… if prices are decent!

Ok, for the weather today…
We are showing just about full sunshine all day long with a high around 88º, light breezes from the northeast, an average humidity level of just 53%, and a UV index of a very high ‘8’. If the 88º holds up, we’ll have a super nice day ahead! The sunrise was at 6:39, with the setting due at 7:47 pm. And the overnight low should be 63º.

In the General Store today…
We are in good shape in the Barn Room, with the lineup this morning being red tomatoes, green tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, chopper peppers, Marconi peppers, Poblano peppers, Jalapeno peppers, zucchini squash, yellow squash, butternut squash, potatoes (reds & whites), onions, garlic, eggplant, a couple last cantaloupes, and several seedless watermelons. We also have a few more fresh cherry tomatoes in stock this morning, and a couple pints of fresh okra.
There are also several baked goods in stock, as well several loaves of real sourdough bread from Stude-A-Baker. And we’ll be picking up our huge Friday baked goods order, as well as more of the real sourdough bread this afternoon.

Outside the General Store today…
I guess we’d better begin this section again since autumn items are beginning to show up.
We do have straw bales in stock right now, although the prices are not what I wanted them to be ($7.95/bale).
We also have quite a few early mums that are a tad smaller but growing steadily. These are the ‘hardy mums’, and are priced at $10.95.

Canned goods, pure raw honey, and apple butters are in decent stock this morning as well.
And our meat freezer is stocked with all-natural ground beef, steaks, and other fine cuts of pasture-grazed, Hereford beef from the local McCorkill Family Farms.

Around the Farmstead today…
Not sure how much we’ll get done today as it is another double auction day for us. I really can’t chance missing one that might have some good buys for our customers! We’re not in need of a lot of items, however we're always looking for a few odds & ends, seasonal items, and new arrivals of fall produce.

Yesterday wasn’t as productive as I wanted it to be (I know… but I tried!). However, I did accomplish a few things from my list. Much of the morning got taken up with pricing our new fall pumpkins & gourds, checking our current price lists, and finding items for our new watering system (which is a huge project in itself!).

We are also planning on picking up not only our big canned goods order, but also a candle order for fall, as well as a few other items we’re needing when we are in those areas.

Of course, when I’m in the store, I always like to visit with a customer or two (OK, maybe a few more), and catch up on things. I’m out of the store so much that some of them haven’t seen me in months or even longer!

Anyway, we’ll see how it goes today and hopefully will be able to knock off a couple more things from that big ‘To Do’ list of mine!
I’ll post a quick update later this afternoon/evening when we return from the auctions.

Thursday Morning Update (8/26):

Well, it looks like today may be our ‘cooler’ day for the week, meaning predicting a high less than 90º. Actually, tomorrow seems to look about the same if they don’t change it on us. The high today is ‘showing’ 88º, with north winds helping us out, so we’ll see how that goes.

Yesterday was a good day at the auctions for us. We couldn’t get the melons we wanted, but we were able to pick up some more mums, as well as some mini pumpkins & gourds, Indian corn, and a few other autumn items. We also restocked on red potatoes and tomatoes.
I left the Leadmine auction in time to get to Hickory Co., leaving Coley at Leadmine. They hadn’t yet gotten to the mums that were there, so she decided to stay until they sold. I didn’t expect her to get them as there were several dealers there who have been purchasing early mums like we do. When I messaged her later, she let me know she was able to get 48 of them at a decent price, which actually startled me. That was her first experience purchasing at the auction, so I’m hoping that continues!

For the weather today…
We’re still listed as “excessive heat” in our area, but the forecast seems much better than it’s been. The high is showing 88º, with winds from the north (which should help us), and an average humidity of just 57% (which should also help). The UV index is at a very high ‘8’ today, and the sunrise was at 6:38 with the setting at 7:48 this evening. And the overnight low should be around 63º, which is also an improvement.
At this point, tomorrow looks to be about the same. But after that, we begin another HOT week. I believe the longer forecasts are showing some cooling down the following week, so maybe we’ll get our seasonal change then. We’ll just have to wait and see!

Well, I won’t have Coley today as she’ll be busy getting ready for her lady’s Bible study this evening. Once again, all of the ladies are invited (and welcome) to join this. It begins at 6pm sharp in the cabin behind the General Store. Come check it out if you’re not busy this evening.

I plan on working around several areas IF the temps don’t get out of hand today. I have several things to do in the garden areas since Coley has been spending time helping me with the auctions lately. I’ve got some cleanup there that I really want to see done. The grapes have been ruling things in the berry garden, so they are about to get a major cut-back! Our blackberry vines weren’t able to do as well as they should have because of the grapes, so I’m going to let them see more sunshine right away!

I also need to unload some items that we’ve kept in the large trailer, so it will be ready for picking up mums and other fall items. Of course, I have a few boards and some plywood in that trailer which will have to go somewhere safe, so that will require me finding those places. And I do NOT intend on “cramming” them into the Big Shop and having more mess to deal with later on! That’s one of the main scenarios that causes our problems around here.
But of course, the area they SHOULD go into still hasn’t been cleaned out and fitted for handling lumber. Although, I DO have that on my list to do. Here goes the Rubik’s Cube deal again! To make room for the lumber, I’ll have to move things in there somewhere else, that probably has things that also need to move somewhere, which also has some other things that need to…
Well, you get the idea.

I’ll work this all out somehow.

Midweek Morning Update (8/26):

Good morning to all! It’s a bit humid out there this morning, but it should be turning into a decent day, according to the weather apps. They bumped the high back up into the low 90’s (which they predicted yesterday as the mid 80’s). So it sounds like another warm day headed our way. We’ll see how it that turns out very soon!

Yesterday was a decent day in the General Store again, selling lots of produce and also several fall décor items. At this rate we may run out before the actual fall sets in! But, we have another full tub to unload and put on the shelves, so hopefully, no worries.
Today will be the auctions again, and we’re struggling to decide what and how much to get. Of course, much of that will depend on the quantities at the auctions, and the prices! We’re about out of cantaloupes and getting low on watermelons, so we’ll be deciding on those, as well as a few other produce items, and also any fall produce that may show up.
This particular transition period is normally a bit stressful, mainly because of those ‘uncertainties’ at the auctions. And the prices can vary incredibly from one auction to another! For example, I picked up 18 early mums last Monday, and put them for sale here at $10.95 ea., then went back on Wednesday and watched the same type mums go wholesale for $15.00 ea. And when I went to Hickory Co. that day, their mums like that went even higher! As Dad used to say, “You just never know!”

I’ve found over the years that you can attempt to plan on things, chart sales from year to year to get a vague idea of how sales ‘might’ go, and even check how much you ordered in previous years verses how much was left over. And those things can help some, but when you really get into actual facts happening currently, “you just never know”, until it happens!

For the weather today…
We should be looking at a fairly nice day, with mostly sunny skies, a high around 93º, and light winds from the northeast to hopefully keep things decent. The average humidity will be 61%, and the UV index is at a high ‘8’. The sunrise was at 6:37 with the setting at 7:50 this evening. And the overnight low should be around 70º.
I’m not going to waste time with tomorrow’s forecast since that trick never seems to work!

Around the Farmstead today…
I had planned on getting a LOT done yesterday (as usual), but I got sidetracked (also as usual) with an issue on Josh’s truck. Long story short, I ended up pulling off his weather stripping around the driver’s door, which was leaking, cleaning everything, and reinstalling it correctly for him. The door now shuts perfectly and also should shed water correctly.
I also took our flatbed truck into the shop for a servicing and checking the front brakes. After the servicing and having new brake pads installed, we brought that back home as well. Now, I’m going to get serious about the Suburban. I may not have mentioned it, but we’re looking at transmission problems again! More on that later.
I did get all the weedeating done around the store and other places before the heat set in yesterday. I also spent some time getting parts located for a new watering system we want to have for our mums this year. With so many of them out there during the season, it takes hours to keep them all watered. I’m hoping we can alleviate that situation this year! We’ll see!

I’m not expecting today’s auctions to take too long, but we’ll also have to wait and see about that. If Leadmine has the melons priced decently, things may go well for us. But if not, I’ll have to make another run over to Hickory Co. and have Coley bring the truck to load up. The double auctions are getting tough to do now, but soon they will be on separate days again. Hickory Co. on Monday and Thursday, and Leadmine on Tuesday and Friday. Of course, that limits me to one day a week here to catch up on things, and Saturdays will be “all hands on deck” during the fall rush! But, we’re used to that and ready to go! (I hope)

We’re planning out the days that will be the busiest during that time so we can have all our bases covered inside and outside. But of course, as we’ve found out over and over again… “You just never know!”

Tuesday Morning Update (8/26):

Good morning to all on this nice, cool beginning of a late-summer day! We’re seeing many very nice mornings like this lately, giving us a hint of the upcoming season. And as most people are saying now… We’re ready for it!

Yesterday was a great sales day for the General Store, but it wasn’t that great at the auctions. We went to Leadmine and basically were able to only restock on red tomatoes. What produce was there brought higher prices than usual, and we weren’t really finding what we needed. After spending about an hour and a half to scope most of it out, Coley loaded up to go home and I headed over to Hickory Co. to check that auction out. Long story short… I ended up leaving about an hour or so later with nothing. Luckily I drove the Chevy Cruze again (34 mpg), so the main thing I wasted was my time. But these things are necessary as you just never know what an auction might bring. And with autumn on the way, things could change in a hurry, as far as mums and such entering into the scene. We don’t need to miss any ‘deals’ we could pass on to our customers!

Ok, for the weather today…
Today should make it into the low 90’s, but after that we’ll have a short run of days in the 80’s. We should have a nice mix of sun & clouds today, with light winds from the southeast, an average humidity level of 68%, and a UV index of ‘6’. The sunrise was at 6:37, with the setting due at 7:51 tonight. And the overnight low should be 73º.
Tomorrow is supposed to be similar, but with a high in the mid 80’s.

Coley and I will be here all day, so we should be able to get a handle on a few of those pesky things on our “to-do” list! I do have to get our flatbed truck in for a service this morning, and hopefully that will all go well. I’m going to have them check everything over on it since it will soon be in full swing, picking up mums, pumpkins, and everything else!
We have LOTS to take care of outdoors, including catching up on weed-eating, planning a couple more display areas for fall items, mowing the ditch in front of the Lodge, beginning the clean up inside the Farmstead Cabin, and more! I need to stop listing all this as it wears me out just thinking about it lately.
I may have to go in and sit down for a few minutes before hitting the ground running today!
Wow!! I’ve GOT to stop being so transparent to you guys… You may get the wrong idea that I’m just slowing down in my older age or something! That’s just not the case! I mean, I can still do a lot of work, cutting wood, cleaning out brush, unloading feed bags, throwing pallets on the... truck, moving... things... and… whoa… I really do need to sit down now… see ya’ tomorrow…

Monday Morning Update (8/24):

We’ll here we are at “School Week”! I’m sure all of the kids are totally excited to get back into that (ahem…). Tomorrow will be the first day of the new school year, so be careful if you’re driving anywhere near the schools. Busses will be scattered around the area and some of the littler folks are hard to see!

With that, will soon come all of the other signs of early autumn, like fence rows with sumac turning color, several fields having shades of brown with final hay bales here & there, and a certain 'look' in the forests indicating the trees are just waiting for the change to arrive.
Of course, we’ll also begin to see straw bales (ours will arrive today!), pumpkins showing up, bundles of cornstalks, and all kinds of odd-shaped gourds and such beginning to dominate the front yards! And all of those beautiful fall mums popping up everywhere (we also have a few of them in stock)! Now, I’m really not trying to rush this, but I must admit, I'm beginning to feel like the vast majority of our customers who tell us… “I’m ready for fall to get here!!”

We had a very good day in the General Store last Saturday, with lots of fresh produce selling as well as many of our fall décor items going out. It was a pretty even mix of items about all day long. It was good to see and visit with so many of our regular and new customers! We appreciate each & every one!

We’re looking at a very nice day ahead, with mixes of sun & clouds throughout the day, a high in the mid 80’s, light winds from the southeast, an average humidity of 69%, and a UV index of ‘7’. The sunrise happened at 6:36, and the sunset will be at 7:53 this evening. And the overnight low will be 71º.
Tomorrow looks to be similar, but with more sunshine and temps reaching the 90º mark.

Saturday morning update:

We have a fresh order of baked goods on the shelves this morning!! All of the favorite big, soft cookies like oatmeal, molasses, walnut frosties, snickerdoodle, chocolate cappuccino, and more are here, along with fresh breads, cream cheese braids, and all the luscious sweet breads such as banana nut, zucchini, pumpkin, and apple sweet bread. These are all made by the Mennonite bakery in Leadmine.

We're also stocked up with cantaloupes and seedless watermelons this morning, along with most of the other fresh summer produce!

AND, we just brought in some early hanging mums to help us get ready for the next season, so you may want to check those out as well! ($10.95 ea.)

We're open from 9am to 6pm as usual today, so come on by if you get a minute or two!

Friday Morning Update (8/21):

Good morning to all! We have a very nice morning out there right now, with a balmy breeze and a temp of 66º. It is really feeling more like an autumn morning than a late summer one! However, that may change here in a couple of hours, as the high is supposed to be in the low 90’s. BUT… after that I’m seeing 80’s for the next week or so. Of course, I don’t need to remind you that things can change around here pretty easily!

Yesterday was not exactly the day I’d planned, but I’m also getting used to that happening. I got my running done in Buffalo, then over in Bolivar, and even made a stop at the chiropractor for one last attempt to help the poor old back. After that, Coley called me and let me know the power was out in the cabin again (seems to happen on Thursdays before Bible study!), so I quickly headed home, found the problem, and fixed it!
After that, I helped Joshua in the store for a bit, and tried to take it easy on the back for at least a little while. It’s easy for those doctors to say, “OK, now go home, put your feet up, and put some ice on your back off & on for a couple of hours!" It’s a lot harder for me to do, though! However, I did comply at least for a little while and then went out and was careful not to lift much of anything for a while. This time he gave me a small lift to put in my boot on the right side, as that’s the side that is always a bit shorter. I walked around with it for a while and I guess it did seem better, at least then. This morning I could tell that I did something different as some of the other joints were ‘talking’ to me. I suppose that’s to be expected. Since my one leg was indeed a little shorter, maybe this will help things in the long run. And here are the famous words again… “We’ll just have to wait and see.”

I noticed we are again out of round, sirloin, and ribeye steaks, so we’ll be contacting Andy right away. These items are really moving quickly now. BTW, the girls were at the Bible study at the cabin last night, so I threw a nice smaller fillet steak on the grill for Joshua and me, and fixed some potatoes and corn along with it. That was a REAL treat! It's just hard to beat a flavorful, juicy, all-natural steak from the grill!!

Around the Farmstead today…

Are we already to this point again? Ok, the Farmstead has been on the back burner for a while, and with today’s auctions again, it may stay there for a while longer. The problem has been both Coley and I going to the auctions lately, which began when I couldn’t lift boxes over 10 lbs. or so. I’ve been healing up now, but it became apparent that when both of us go, we can work together to hit both auctions very well. Of course, that takes her out of the garden and the rest of the farmstead, so waa-la!… nothing gets done around here! Or at least, very little.

We HAVE to harvest the garden this morning, as there are lots of cherry tomatoes that need to come in, as well as some bell peppers and okra. So, we’ll try to get that this morning before we go. But with today’s auctions as well as picking up our baked goods, I’m pretty sure we won’t see a lot of progress anywhere else. I guess keeping the General Store stocked & going is the main thing, so it’s all good!
And, you just never know what we might be able to do in a day. The only thing I can say about that is… “We’ll just have to wait and see!” (Have I said that before??)

Thursday Morning Update (8/20):

Good morning on this foggy, kind of dampish morning! We’re supposed to see this stuff leave soon, and then have a nice, sunny day. But after what’s been happening with forecasts lately… I’ll just say, we’ll see.

Well, yesterday was a pretty good day at the auctions, with us picking up another nice bin of cantaloupes at Leadmine, and then going over to the Hickory Co. auction and picking up a bin of watermelons. Coley went with me again, taking the flatbed truck, and we snagged the bin of ‘lopes, along with a fair buy on fresh tomatoes. That’s about all we could get over there, between lower stock and higher prices! After loading her up, Coley headed back to the store and I ran over to Hickory Co. to check out what was there. After buying a bin of watermelons at a ‘tolerable’ price, I called her to come on over while I checked out the rest of the auction. I was able to get a few other items like bell peppers, eggplant, and cucumbers, as well. About the time the auction was done, she pulled in and we loaded her up again.
I really don’t like the stress involved in going to the first auction at noon and having to run as quickly as possible to make the other auction by 2pm. However, the way we’re doing it seems to be the best for the store. I do have to admit though, doing two auctions back to back, as well as the time-stress involved, certainly drains a guy. (No! I’m sure that has nothing to do with age!!)

Anyway, we’re pretty well stocked up with about everything again except sweet corn. They did have quite a bit of sweet corn at Hickory, but when I looked at it, and spoke to the guy who brought it down from the river bottoms of the Missouri River, I discovered it was GMO corn that had been heavily sprayed. He normally sells it to... well, I’ll just say larger grocery stores. That’s not what we like to handle here, so I let it go. I really don’t expect to see him back as it went extremely cheap and he didn’t look happy at all!

Ok, for the weather today…
AI tells us, “You can expect pleasant and mostly sunny conditions for today, clearing out nicely after a cloudy start, with a high near 88º.
I’ll add to that, light winds from the north, an average humidity of 70%, and a UV index of a high ‘8’. The sunrise was at 6:32 with the setting due at 7:58.
I think I’m going to skip tomorrow’s weather 'at this point', since that trick never works!

In the General Store today…
The Barn Room is again in good shape this morning, with our lineup being red tomatoes, a few yellow tomatoes, green tomatoes, fresh cucumbers, bell peppers (both green and colored), chopper peppers, sweet banana peppers, Marconi peppers, Poblano peppers, Jalapeno peppers, zucchini squash, new potatoes (white and red), onions, eggplant, okra, green beans, cantaloupes, and seedless watermelons.
There are several baked goods in stock, as well some fresh loaves of sourdough bread from Stude-A-Baker. BTW, we have a few of their new types, cranberry orange, and blueberry lemon, in stock this morning.
AND, we still have some nice, locally grown Bartlett PEARS in stock, priced at $1.19 /lb. These are great for eating fresh or slicing and freezing for future use. And if you need a larger quantity of them, let us know and we’ll work you out a bulk price.

Canned goods, pure raw honey, and apple butters are in decent stock this morning as well.
And our meat freezer is restocked with all-natural ground beef, steaks, and other fine cuts of pasture-grazed, Hereford beef from the local McCorkill Family Farms.
Also, the Barn Room still has some garden items available.

Around the Farmstead today…
I have to make a run to Bolivar this morning, as well as get my driver license renewed, so I’ll be busy with that first thing.
Coley will be working on the lady’s Bible study for this evening, preparing the old cabin as well as fixing a small meal for those who don’t have time to eat first. It’s a smaller group that begins at 6pm in the cabin behind the store, and is open to all who would like to come check it out. They have a short video and then go through the Scriptures pertaining to it. It’s been a real blessing to several since it promotes personal thoughts & questions, and they find Biblical answers. (I kind of wish I could attend, but then I’m not a lady, so…)

Anyway, I’m thinking I’ll return at least by noon, so I’ll still have quite a bit of time to get back on projects again. I don’t want to waste this cooler day. Hey, speaking of that, I see next week is showing cooler temps throughout the week! Maybe our season WILL be changing a bit earlier this year! Again… We’ll see!
