Greasy Creek General Store We are a small family business in Buffalo, MO. carrying items for spring, summer, fall, and winter. Everything we carry is locally home-grown and vine-ripened.

Our store has seasonal phases that rotate us through the whole year. We get started in early spring with bedding plants for the garden-growers. We carry a wide variety of vegetable plants, some melons, some berries, and herbs. We also carry flowers and hanging baskets, as well as lawn and patio cedar furniture that has been handcrafted right here in Buffalo. As soon as the gardens come on, we begin handling fresh, farm-grown, vine-ripened produce. Green beans are a main crop for us, and we've sold hundreds of pounds of them over the last few years. Other favorites are tomatoes, cucumbers, all kinds of squash and peppers, new potatoes, egg plant, and you name it. What we don't grow right here in our own gardens on Greasy Creek Hill, we get from the Mennonites of Lead Mine, MO. In addition to our produce line, we carry some basic grocery items. Milk is in the fridge; bread is on the counter; jams, jellies, honey, apple butter, and sorghum line the shelves. We also carry cookies and breads from the Lead Mine Mennonite bakery! Country, Primitive, and Rustic Home Décor is a big part of our General Store all year around, but especially during the fall and winter months when the gardens have died out. We carry a large line of bathroom and kitchen accents, high-quality Thompson wax crumbles, candles, LED flameless candles, wax warmers, candle holders & accessories, chicken wire and other country items, baskets, and a large line of Mason Jar items like soap dispensers, lights, lamps, containers, and many other gifts and goodies. You can also find anything from old-fashioned aprons to country grapevine wreaths to cast iron skillets to bird houses & feeders. In the fall we deck the place out with straw bales, pumpkins and gourds, corn stalks, and indoor decor. During the Christmas season we carry a large assortment of tree ornaments, snowmen, nativity sets, and other holiday decor. Over in our blacksmith shop, Josh Bush makes a variety of things like hooks, towel holders, ornamental pieces, and more. Since 2016, events and workshop classes have joined the ranks of what Greasy Creek General Store is all about. We host several large events throughout the year, and regularly have classes scheduled to teach interested students some of the dying arts of our heritage. Thursday Morning Update (10/15):

We’ll, we’re getting the rains we’ve needed for a long time now, better late than never! We got about an inch the night before last, and now I just saw we got a little over an inch from yesterday and last night again, so things are really looking up. It’s too late to affect much of the color this fall, but maybe it will help here & there with later-turning trees and bushes.
We have more rain scheduled today, so hopefully we’ll get things back how they should be soon.

Yesterday was a slower day in the General Store, obviously due to the weather, however we still had a decent sales day at the end. The Hickory Co. auction was about how I figured it would be… pretty much a waste of time. I did come back with some cucumbers, and that’s it. The next auction is on Tuesday, and I’d say it will be about the same. Things are really slowing down to a halt now, so whatever you can find in fresh produce… better get!

I really don’t have much to report on today, except that I’ll be leaving tonight on a trip to Hannibal, so I’ll be out for a couple days. Josh and Coley will be here watching the store and farmstead, and Josh will have the royal duties of taking care of “Ms. Ella” our ‘boss kitty’. She stays in the house at night and doesn’t like me to be gone, so Josh gets the ‘privilege’ of staying in our house to be with her while I’m gone. Of course, he’ll have to feed her special food to her, get her perfect mix of warm water & milk for her in the morning, and give her the special treats she gets during the day (not that she’s spoiled or anything, I just like to take care of her).

Ok, for the weather today…
We have a jumbled mix of things today, so much that I’ll call this another “up for grabs” day. The apps are showing mostly clouds, some possible sunshine around noon or so, more clouds, and chances of rain scattered throughout the day (changing every 10 minutes or so!). The high should be around 77º, with light winds from the southeast, an average humidity of 87%, and a UV index of ‘2’. The sunrise will be at 7:21 with the setting due at 6:35pm. And the overnight low should be around 50º.
Tomorrow changes things up with partly cloudy skies, a high in the low to mid 50’s, and light winds from the northwest. That’s sounding more like fall now!

In the General Store today…
The produce lineup in the Barn Room this morning is still good (for the season), with tomatoes (a bit low), fresh cucumbers, fresh bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, some miscellaneous peppers, zucchini squash, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, acorn squash, potatoes, onions, garlic, and fresh sweet potatoes.
There are some baked goods in stock this morning, as well as all of our canned goods, pure raw honey, apple butters, and sorghum. And the meat freezer is good, with newly added, all-natural ground beef, steaks, roasts, and other fine cuts of pasture-grazed, Hereford beef from the local McCorkill Family Farms.

Outside the General Store today…
Our lineup outside this morning is still decent, with a good selection of hardy mums, Rudbeckias, several celosias, a few fall Echinaceas, and several sizes of pumpkins and various gourds ranging from mini to maxi sizes.

I don’t have much more to talk about, other than to let you know that with me being out tomorrow morning, I’ll be skipping the Morning Update that day. So, I’ll be catching things up on Monday morning!

BTW, we’ll be getting a huge, fresh order of baked goods this Friday afternoon, and will be ready for a nice fall Saturday!

Midweek Morning Update (1014):

Well, here we go into some real fall weather now! We’re getting the rain we desperately needed, as well as temps that align more with this season of the year. This looks to be a very interesting day with the high temperature in the low 70’s (which began last night around 2am), and continuing on through the day today until around 7pm, then dropping down into the upper 60’s by tomorrow morning. It's not only 'interesting', but also a RELIEF!

Ok, yesterday’s auction wasn’t anything to ‘write home about’, but we were able to pick up some bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, a few tomatoes, some nice cucumbers, and also more garlic. That was about it, and the prices weren’t all that great (no price increases here, though).
Today will be the Hickory Co. auction, and I’m not expecting much there either since the farmers are running of produce out now. We’ll just wait and see (as we say so many times around here).

I didn’t get much done outside yesterday, mainly because of the heat. This has truly been one of the strangest autumn seasons I remember! I’m hoping this latest temperature change holds fast! They have Friday and Saturday showing possibly in the upper 50’s on my app! Next week looks like we’ll have all 70’s, so that will indeed be a huge improvement.

Here are the details on today’s weather…
As of 6:45am today... it looks like mostly cloudy skies, a high in the low to mid 70’s, and scattered chances of rain throughout the day. The winds should be light and mainly from the north, and the average humidity is at 91%. The UV index is at a ‘1’, and the sunrise will occur at 7:20 with the setting at 6:36pm. And the overnight low should be 68º.
Tomorrow has chances of rain as well, with a bit higher temps, but should still be in the 70’s (at least as of right now).

In the General Store today…
The produce lineup in the Barn Room this morning is still good (for the season), with tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, some miscellaneous peppers, zucchini squash, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, acorn squash, potatoes, onions, garlic, and fresh sweet potatoes.
There are some baked goods in stock this morning, as well as all of our canned goods, pure raw honey, apple butters, and sorghum. And the meat freezer is good, with all-natural ground beef, steaks, and other fine cuts of pasture-grazed, Hereford beef from the local McCorkill Family Farms. And we just got another new batch of meat in last evening.

Our lineup outside this morning is decent, with a good selection of hardy mums, Rudbeckias, several celosias, a few fall Echinaceas, and several sizes of pumpkins and various gourds ranging from mini to maxi sizes.

I want to update you on the produce situation as of today...
We are trying our dead-level best to keep produce as long as we possibly can, however, I must let you know that everything is closing up now. I’m going to estimate our tomatoes running out by sometime next week, and other items following soon after. We should have some peppers a little longer, and we should be set to have some of our squashes and sweet potatoes well into November or so (especially butternut squash). Since I picked up more garlic yesterday, we should have that available for a while, as well as some jalapenos, albeit they may end up being a little limp by then, but still good for canning or freezing. We’ll also have bell peppers that will be about the same.
There are many ways to freeze these items for use over this winter, or as many of you do… can them.
If you’re like us, we just freeze some of the tomatoes like the 2nds, putting them in a plastic bag or placing them on a cookie sheet in the freezer and then into a freezer bag. Then when you pull them out to use them in sauces, chili, or whatever, you can simply run them under tepid water and the skin easily peels off.
I like to let them thaw a bit, place them in my Nutri-bullet to turn into a thick juice, and put that in a saucepan to cook on low. My favorite 'go-to' tonic is made by adding fresh blended-up celery, onion, carrots, and a little honey into that mix to cook. It ends up tasting like a thicker V-8 juice!
Tomatoes are unique in that cooking them makes the lycopene in them more palatable. Other veggies are better raw. Tomatoes are also great sources of vitamin C and potassium.

Ok, enough of that for now. Just like the produce ending, I’m going to end this update and let you all get back to whatever you were doing (before you were so rudely interrupted!).

Tuesday Morning Update (10/13):

Say hello to our final day of heat for the season (at least that’s what I’m hearing!). Today will hit the 90’s again, and then the situation changes drastically, with rain, cooler weather, and all the other fall features we’re used to! Yes, we’re also used to these ‘weather predictions’, but this one certainly sounds solid… (here it comes… “WE'LL SEE”!).

We’ve actually been having very good days in the General Store despite the temps, so that’s an indicator that people are determined to enjoy fall no matter what the temperatures are attempting to do to us. Our fall items have been selling very well and customers are still in that mood, so to the temps I say, “nice try, but no cigar!” (as some of the old folks used to say).
Of course, we’re still moving some fresh produce as well, and I’m hoping we can restock on a few items at today’s auction. Last week I was able to grab some nice tomatoes, and we’ll just have to wait and see what’s available today. We’ll do our best, but I’m somewhat skeptical about the amounts and pricing today.

Yesterday was a good day as far as getting things done around here. Coley got all of the mums straightened out and placed over on the store side of the road so people don’t have to walk back & forth looking for the ones they want. We did leave the Rudbeckias on the other side, as well as the large mums, along with the jumbo pumpkins. Both are getting low, but that’s to be expected about now. We’re pretty good on most of our other pumpkins & gourds, but they are also going quickly as we approach the halfway mark of this month.

For the weather today…
As I mentioned, we’re looking at our last day in the 90’s, with mostly sunshine again, light to moderate winds from the southwest, an average humidity of 59% (a bit higher due to rain approaching later this evening), and a UV index of ‘4’. The sunrise will be at 7:19 with the setting at 6:38pm. And the overnight low should be 71º.
As of now, the rain is predicted to begin during the night, possibly around 2am or so, starting with possible thunderstorms. Now, as we all know… (anyway, enough of that).

I’ll also be tending to a few mums that need some dead-heading of flowers this morning before it gets too hot.

Monday Morning Update (10/12):

Good morning to all, on another beginning of a fall week in the Ozarks!
First, I have to give a huge thanks to all who came out to the festival on the square last Saturday. It was an amazing time, and we are happy to announce that it was officially the “1st Annual Art-um Fest”, and we’ll be looking forward to the 2nd, 3rd, and so on! I know the name can sound confusing to some, but ‘art’ is something that expresses itself in so many areas that many don’t associate it with. I remember when the Buffalo “Art Walk” began, and several of our customers told us they weren’t that interested in paintings and drawings. We spent quite a bit of time explaining that everything is an ‘art’ in its own fashion, whether it’s painting, making pottery, photography, woodworking, blacksmithing, cooking, or even cleaning (well, let’s not go that far), but you know what I mean. So, the “art” is in whatever you do. It’s even an “art” to communicate by writing things like the Morning Updates (now we really better get off this or I’m cooked!).
Anyway, we had a great Saturday, at the festival and at the General Store, and we really appreciate all of our awesome customers coming out to either of them!

This week will be a different one, since the auctions are both down to one day now. Cynthia is off today and I’ll be helping her unpack things from the festival, add some of her items to our store lineup inside, and also do some cleanup outside the General Store. Also, she and I will be leaving this Thursday evening for a short trip over the weekend, so I’ll have things to handle getting ready for that, as well. Josh and Coley will be taking care of the store tasks, so all will be running as usual around here.

Ok, for the weather today…
It’s looking like just about full sunshine today, with a high in the low 90’s again, light winds from the southwest, an average humidity of just 46%, and a UV index of ‘4’. The sunrise will be at 7:18 with the setting at 6:39 this evening. And the overnight low should be 70º. I’ll mention here that they are calling for significant chances of rain coming up this Wednesday and Thursday. I’m not ‘holding my breath’ on that, but it sounds encouraging anyway!

Around the Farmstead today…
We’ll be getting back to some cleanup around the ‘stead today. The temps will be a little higher than we like, but with the lower humidity, you can slip into some shade and seem to cool off ok. The problem will be to make sure some ‘shade’ is around!

I intend to work on mums this morning, filling in empty spaces, deadheading a little here & there, and making sure they are all watered nicely. We sold a ton of them over the weekend at both the store and the stand at the festival, but we still have a nice selection of them, just a bit lower quantity.

I guess that’s about it for today’s update. Just keep on enjoying the autumn time as much as you can, even with the extra degrees that we didn’t ask for! The temps should be falling later in the week and we may be looking for flannel shirts!

Good Saturday afternoon!! We are going strong at both the General Store and the Artumn Fest on the Buffalo square!! We started the day off early, setting up for the Fest, and after opening, we found LOTS of our customers who came out to support it! It has been going well there and the crowds have been large.
When I finally got back to the General Store to check on Josh, he had cars stacked up and several customers inside! So, it looks like a very good weekend all around!

The mums and pumpkins are selling like crazy now, and our stock is showing it. We still have a good selection presently, but it will surely change soon at this rate.

Don't forget we have a brand new load of fresh baked goods from the Leadmine bakery in stock at the store. We also restocked heavily on fresh tomatoes at yesterday's auction, so we'll be good for a while.

We're here until 6pm this evening, so come on by if we can help you with anything at the store!
The festival also goes until 6pm, so keep that in mind as well!

Friday Morning Update (10/9):

Here we are at the end of another week, and looking at the ‘Artumn Fest’ on the Buffalo Square coming up TOMORROW!! Today will be exciting as we get final things ready for it, and tomorrow will be exciting as we begin the festival! There will be many awesome venders setting up with us, and also food vendors & live music will be provided during the day. ‘Clay and Canvas’, who is the sponsor of the fest, will be doing all kinds of neat activities during the day as well. It all starts at 10am on the square, so I hope you’ve made plans to come and enjoy the season as you browse the booths, grab some great food, enjoy some freshly-brewed coffee & treats, take in the music, and have fun with the activities!!

Ok, today we have the Leadmine auction, which didn’t provide us with much last Tuesday, but I’m hoping we can find some tomatoes to restock for a few more days! I’m sure many others will have the same goals, so we’ll just have to see what happens today! As I’ve mentioned lately… the fresh produce is definitely on the way out now, so it’s just a matter of time before… well, you know!

For the weather today…

Yep… you guessed it! Between the auction, baked goods order, and the Artumn Fest, nothing will get done around our poor, forlorn, farmstead again! But hold on, ‘cause next week’s a-comin’!! Wait… I’ve got to be gone Thursday through the weekend! Ok, we’ll plan on the NEXT week to begin the projects around here HOT & HEAVY!
Well, anyway, we’ll eventually get back to work around here, but for this weekend… Don’t forget to visit us at the Artumn Fest in Buffalo tomorrow!

Thursday Morning Update (10/8):

Here we are seven days into October already, and the best is yet to come! We’re looking at some nice fall days in the upcoming weeks, and time to reminisce through all of the summer memories we experienced this year (minus the 100º temps, of course!). I hope we all have some nice ones to recall!

Ok, yesterday’s auction at Hickory Co. actually wasn’t much better than Leadmine was, as far as amounts of produce and pricing. I ended up coming back with ONE flat of tomatoes at a high price (no, we’re not raising our price). However, I did get some nice zucchini squash and also restocked on butternut squash at a fairly decent price, so it wasn’t a total loss. The produce is for sure ending now, so I don’t expect we’ll have it much longer. The next auction is this Friday, so just maybe…

Today I’ll be here most of the day, and working on the final preparations for the Artumn Fest on the Buffalo square this Saturday. We have several little (hopefully) tasks to take care of, and I’m planning on getting EVERYTHING accomplished for it today (again, hopefully!).
I’ve also been doing a few things from our long, Farmstead 'To Do’ list when I get a chance in between things, so that’s good. After this Saturday, I’ll be spending more time on that list, as well.

As I mentioned, I’ll be pretty tied up with preparing our booth for this Saturday, so I’m not planning on much more getting done today. It "seems like" it shouldn’t take too long to get that accomplished, but then again… we all know how those little "seems like" tasks go, don’t we?!! And I’m sure Cynthia will have a few things to add to that list, so as I said, I’m not planning on much more getting done today!

Midweek Morning Update (10/7):

Good morning to all! It’s another very nice morning out there with the moon & stars brightly shining, just awaiting the sun to begin peeking over the horizon. It looks like we have another nice fall day ahead of us again!

Our big news for the day is that we are really getting down to the ‘brass tacks’ now, looking forward to this Saturday’s ‘Artum Fest’ on the square in Buffalo! We have all kinds of brand new items to introduce, never before seen in our store, as well as some old familiar items we’ve had since the beginning. We’ll have some unique canned goods, all made the old way from the Amish, as well as lots of seasonal hand-made items by ‘Cynthia-Ann’ to display, and also several of our outdoor fall décor items to offer for the season (like mums & pumpkins). And we’re setting up along side of some awesome vendors with other unique goods to offer! And there will be lots of food and also music throughout the day. It’s all sponsored by ‘Clay & Canvas’ on the southeast corner of the square.

Ok, yesterday was a unique day as well, since we hooked up the trailer to the Suburban (with the new transmission!), traveled up to Leadmine, dropped off the baked goods order for this Friday, and went to the auction only to find produce prices astronomical! I ended up getting some nice bell peppers, but that was it as far as produce! Tomatoes were way out of the ball park, as well as many other produce items. I did pick up a few more Rudbeckia flowers and also some Echinaceas for fall, but basically came home about empty. It was a nice test for the Suburban, though, so at least that was good!
Produce is finally coming to a close for the year, but we’re going to go to the auction at Hickory Co. today to see what’s available there. We’re getting low on tomatoes and I’d like to at least get one more load of them before calling it quits!

For the weather today…
We have a nice day ahead, with full sunshine again, a high in the upper 80’s, light winds from the south, an average humidity of just 45%, and a UV index of ‘5’ again. The sunrise will be at 7:13 with the setting at 6:46 this evening. And the overnight low should be 59º.

In the General Store today…
The produce lineup in the Barn Room this morning is again very good for the season, with fresh tomatoes (still decent quantity), cucumbers, fresh bell peppers, miscellaneous chopper peppers, zucchini squash, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, acorn squash, potatoes, onions, and lots of fresh sweet potatoes.
We also have some baked goods in stock this morning, and all of our canned goods, pure raw honey, apple butters, and sorghum are well-stocked. And again, we’ll be going to the Hickory Co. auction today to see what we can get there.

The meat freezer is also good, with all-natural ground beef, steaks, and other fine cuts of pasture-grazed, Hereford beef from the local McCorkill Family Farms, and we have a NEW BATCH OF STEAKS AND OTHER CUTS ADDED, so check them out if you need some!

Outside the General Store today…
Our lineup outside this morning is straw bales, cornstalks, a good selection of hardy mums, Rudbeckias, several celosias, a few Echinaceas, and all sizes of pumpkins and various gourds ranging from mini to maxi sizes, again, still priced at our Pumpkin Dayz sale prices! The large pumpkins are $3.95, medium pumpkins are $2.50, smaller pumpkins are $1.65, and mini pumpkins are .89¢. We also have our large, various pumpkin-gourds on sale for $5.95, which includes Fairly Tale and Cinderella pumpkins, as well as stacker pumpkins! They are moving quickly, so come check ‘em out if you need some!

Around the Farmstead today…
We got a few more things done yesterday after the auction, and we may do a little more this morning before leaving for Hickory Co.
It’s difficult to start a larger project, knowing that you only have a short amount of time to spend. Also, many of the projects involve pulling things out of an area so you can work in it, but those items can’t sit there in the way very long. We’ll be here all day tomorrow though, so I plan on getting back to the major cleanup we began Monday. We’re going to get the areas around the garden straightened out so they’re not such an eyesore!

And of course, the main focus for the week is on the Artumn Fest this Saturday, so we’ve had to invest a lot of time preparing for that. But… we’ll get everything done sometime, somehow! We always do!
