For my first post I will highlight a quilt project asked of me from a friend. She had a quilt her grandmother made back in the 1950's, with the Grandmother's Flower Garden block design. She asked if I could make a keepsake for her Dad out of the quilt. I thought that would be simple enough. So I agreed. She showed me the quilt and it was in a bad way. The fabric was torn worn and tattered. The blocks were intact but barely. You could tell the fabric was old clothes and bedsheets, not uncommon for quilt making back then. So I had my work cut out for me.
The well loved quilt sat in my quilting area for about a year. I would stare at it from time to time trying to figure out what I would do. I would stare, ponder and cuss. finally I decided to just cut. So I cut all the old fabric until all I had left with the original blocks. Her grandmother's beautiful hand work. All I could think of was the time, talent and love that went into those blocks. I took the best preserved block, and sewed it into another quilt. I added an embroidered block that had her name, date of birth and date of death; accented by some Ohio Star blocks and hand embroidering around the edges. It turned out well. My friend presented it to her Dad on his birthday. My creation made him smile through tears. That was worth the year long pondering. It made my heart happy knowing he had a piece of his mother. That quilt I am told is framed and no one is allowed to touch it except him.
I had some left over blocks from the quilt so I decided to make my friend a quilt. Now she still has a quilt from her grandmother.
All worth it in the end. All the blood, sweat and tears... and that is how the Sore Finger Quilting got started...
Love to you all!
