Stop throwing your w**ds in the trash! They already contain everything your garden needs to thrive! đą
W**d tea is just soaking pulled w**ds in a bucket of water for a few weeks to break down all that plant matter. W**ds tend to have deep roots that suck up nitrogen, potassium, and other minerals from deep down in the dirt that most plants canât reach. Soaking these garden w**ds pulls all those nutrients straight into the water, giving you free plant food!
WHAT TO USE:
Go for deep taproot w**ds before they pop out flowers. True dandelions, false dandelion (catâs ear), stinging nettle, comfrey, and chickw**d are absolute gold.
OTHER PLANTS THAT WORK:
Wild Lettuce, Chicory, Broadleaf Plantain, Ribwort Plantain, Burdock, Purslane, Wild Vetch, Curly Dock, Red Clover, White Clover
WHAT TO AVOID:
1. Runners and creepers (like fogfruit). Toss these in, and youâll just dump live root pieces straight into your potted plants.
2. Aromatic, woody plants (like Russian sage or lavender): Heavily scented plants are packed with essential oils that mess up the good bacteria in your bucket and can stunt young roots.
3. Allelopathic plants (like black mustard): Some invasive w**ds release natural plant-killers into the soil to choke out their neighbors. Fermenting them in water just concentrates that toxin.
4. Anything with flowers or seed heads: Cold water wonât kill seeds! Youâll just end up brewing a bucket of w**d seeds ready to sprout in all your pots.
HOW TO MAKE W**D TEA:
Put your safe w**ds into a bucket (about halfway full).
Fill it up with water and put a lid on loosely so it can breathe.
Let it ferment in the sun for 3-4 weeks. (Fair warning: it is going to smell like sewage when itâs ready. đ)
Strain out the remaining plant sludge, dilute the dark water with fresh water until it looks like weak iced tea, and pour it on your soil. Keep stored in the shade and use within 1-2 weeks.
