First there were 5 trips to the ER for my parents in law, in a two week period. Then, the second largest Burlington snowfall in March. Shortly thereafter, the whole family got the flu! Needless to say, we missed our April 1 start, we have questioned whether Adeline and Leonard will have access to the amount of care that they may need if they live here. My partner and her sister have spent hours visiting Assisted Living Facilities, trying to understand the costs and benefits. The reality seems to be, that, if they could foot the bill for two years worth of Assisted Living expenses, for two people, at about $7000/month +/-, and could squeeze themselves into a room in a facility, that may be in this county...but may be an hour away....then assisted living could be okay. But that is all logistics. The real truth is that these two people have devoted a lifetime to their family. The one thing they value more than anything else....is family. The best medicine for them...is family. Living behind our house would nourish them in a way that no nurse could do, no meal in a dining room with strangers could do, no weekly visit by family could do. Looking out their window they will see our house, with activity, kids running out to share dinner or sitting on their sofa doing homework. Chickens in the yard. Daily, hourly interactions with family and the life sustaining activities of family living. So...a few weeks have gone by and today I am back out in the barn, continuing to clean things up. Our Zoning permit is approved. Our building permit is on the horizon. I'll keep you posted!
