I have been really enjoying playing more with simple sculptures. This dog is inspired from the artist Anna-Karin Åkesson and I wanted to see if I could make something similar. I really want to make one for each of my pups!

It’s been quiet here lately. Lots of life happening and sometimes that means less pottery. But spring is coming and I’m excited for what’s to come! .swallow.pottery and I have 🍑 fest in June, Empty Bowls in May, and possibly an online or other local festival if I can get my act together! These little chickens are what I make when I’m not sure what to work on or just need to do something with my hand while listening to a book or passing the time. I’m a bit obsessed.

First kiln opening since Italy! It has been a BUSY end of summer and I didn’t have a ton of time available to get muddy so it took a while to get a full(ish) kiln. I’m in love with these little pumpkins and ghosts 👻 🎃 and just in time for the season. The coasters were painted by my awesome book club members at our last meeting. And that giraffe yarn bowl….yall. I Didn’t think a bowl could be so challenging, but three tries later I think we have a winner! The other pics are of some charcuterie boards/snack plates I’m testing out.

The creativity doesn’t fall far from the tree. 🌳 🍎 🎨 My mom painted these pieces for her siblings and she paired one of my mugs as a gift! She likes to say she has no talent, but I beg to differ with these beautiful birds!

For my first post, I present broken handle disappointment. Been keeping this thing alive since early July and the moment I decide to work on her, she gets knocked over 😟. Etruscan’s use broken stuff too right? 🤣

It’s been quiet here since getting home from Italy and I haven’t had much opportunity for clay making. I’ve been nursing this coil build “hopeful” vase for 2 weeks and I’m testing the limits of this clay in terms of drying/workability. She’s a bit wonky but I’m hoping to finish this piece by today and then finally get on the wheel this week!

Two weeks under teaching from . We focused on the shape and form of Etruscan pottery which was an ancient Italian civilization. With this knowledge we then were tasked with creating our own versions through coil building and simple surface design using terra sigillata. In the two weeks we were able to visit archeological museums in Volterra, Siena, and Florence to study these vessels and draw inspiration for our own pieces. It’s so difficult to choose photos of the amazing people and places so I’m going to make a few posts.
