Today we have a closeup of a tiny spider on a showy orchis, a small native spring orchid. I know many folks are skeeved out by spiders, but it is the start of spooky season after all. This is for day three of making and posting something every day in September; an arbitrary challenge I set myself to kick my art practice up a notch.

For day two of making and posting daily in September to kickstart my art practice, we have thistles!
Despite being considered by many (most?) to be a w**d, I think thistle flowers are really pretty. This is also me practicing sharing paintings that I’m not completely happy with, since mistakes and imperfection are just part of the art-making process!

What about y’all, do you love or hate thistles?

I’ve been wanting to jumpstart my art practice, so this afternoon I decided to make and post something every day in September.
So here’s my first go! Three types of Chanterelles I recently found on a hike: golden, cinnabar, and yellow foot.
Made with my handcrafted watercolor paints, mostly the Mixing Palette with a touch of my Blue Ridge yellow ochre.

I’ll be vending at the Asheville Downtown Association Independence Day Block Party on Saturday from 3-10pm, so come stop by! I’ll be set up right across the street from Chai Pani Asheville . It’ll be a hot one, but there’ll be live music, fireworks, food trucks, and a bunch of local vendors. (Plus cooling stations, if the heat gets to be too much)

Wanted to share a quick plein air painting of some Pink Lady Slippers, some of the most magical Spring ephemerals in Appalachia! AND! We found Yellow Lady Slippers for the first time, after about a decade of searching. I tell you I shrieked with joy when I spotted one!
