The most common mistake I see? The rug is too small. Every time.
Here's the rule I use: all the major furniture legs in a seating area should either be fully on the rug or at least have the front legs on it. If the rug is floating in the middle with nothing touching it, it's the wrong size.
For a dining room, the rug should be large enough that the chairs stay on it even when pulled out — otherwise people are catching chair legs on the edge every single meal.
The other thing nobody tells you: measure the room first, then shop for rugs. It sounds obvious, but most people do it backwards — they fall in love with something and then try to make the dimensions work.
When in doubt, go bigger. You can always define a space with furniture placement. You can't fix a rug that's too small.
