🕷️ FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🐐

I’ve been trying to think of a Fun Fact Friday all week. Apparently I didn’t need to - around here, sometimes the fun facts just show up on their own. 😂

This morning I was trying to get a good picture of Brownie, one of our little goats, and didn’t even notice at first that we had a photobomber. Then I moved over a little and… apparently somebody else wanted to be featured today! 🕷️🤣

This is a yellow garden spider. They seem to suddenly show up in the fall, but they’ve actually been hanging around all summer. They hatch in the spring and spend the summer growing, and are a lot harder to see when they’re little. By late summer and early fall, the females are BIG and their beautiful orb webs are much harder to miss.

A few more fun facts about our eight-legged visitor:

🕷️ The big ones we usually notice are females. The males are much smaller.

🕸️ They often make a thick white zigzag through the center of their web, which is one reason they’re sometimes called writing spiders.

🕷️ They commonly hang out right in the center of their web during the day - which apparently makes it the perfect spot for goat-photo photobombing. 😂

🦟 They’re great natural pest control and eat flies, mosquitoes, moths, grasshoppers and other insects. Part of why I don’t mind spiders!

🕷️ Despite their slightly terrifying appearance, they’re not aggressive and aren’t considered dangerous to people. They can bite if grabbed or threatened, but they’d much rather be left alone.

🥚 By fall, females make egg sacs that survive the winter. The adults die as the weather gets cold, and the next generation emerges later.

🤦‍♀️ Well, I ALMOST had Fun Fact Friday together this week! 😂

I remembered to post it on Friday and everything!

There was just one tiny problem… I POSTED IT ON THE WRONG BUSINESS PAGE. 🤣

So if you follow All Star Grooming and were wondering why your dog groomer suddenly wanted to teach you about sunflower phytoremediation…that would be me. 😂🌻

Apparently remembering what day it is and remembering which business I’m posting for at the same time is asking a little too much. 🤦‍♀️😂

ANYWAY…here is this week’s slightly misplaced Fun Fact Friday! 🌻

🌻 FUN FACT FRIDAY — THE FINAL SUNFLOWER EDITION! 🌻

How are we already at week FOUR?! 😂 We’ve followed the sun, discovered that one sunflower is actually hundreds of tiny flowers, and learned where all those gorgeous colors came from.

So for our last one, apparently sunflowers aren’t satisfied with just being pretty. They have to be useful too. 😂🌻

Sunflowers have been studied and used in a process called phytoremediation — using plants to help remove certain contaminants from soil.

Their roots can take up substances including some heavy metals and other pollutants, which can then be contained in the plant and removed when the plant is harvested.

Beautiful on top and working below ground. Basically, sunflowers are overachievers. 😂

I hope you’ve enjoyed our little sunflower detour this month! I certainly have — although anyone who knows me knows I didn’t exactly need another reason to love sunflowers. 🌻

Now the question is… what should we learn about next? 😁

🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Around here, “beautiful décor made for real life” definitely includes dog hair, muddy paws, nose prints and at least one dog who thinks everything you’re doing requires supervision. 😂

And really… would we have it any other way?

Today we’re celebrating the four-legged family members who follow us from room to room, greet us like we’ve been gone for three years when it’s been 20 minutes, and somehow manage to make themselves part of just about every memory we make. 🐶

The world lost a whole lot of sparkle today. ✨

Dolly Parton was one of those people I always admired — not just for her music, but for who she was. She came from humble beginnings, dreamed BIG, worked hard, built an incredible life and somehow never stopped feeling like a real, down-to-earth country girl.

She was funny, talented, smart, generous, unapologetically herself and proof that you can love rhinestones, big hair and pretty things and still be one heck of a strong businesswoman. ❤️

I think that’s what I loved most about her — she never seemed to change who she was to fit somebody else’s idea of who she should be.

Rest easy, Dolly. I have a feeling Heaven is a whole lot brighter — and probably a little more sparkly — tonight. ❤️✨
