🎃👻 FUN FACT FRIDAY! 👻🎃

Halloween wasn’t always about candy, costumes, and pumpkins! Some of our favorite spooky traditions have surprisingly old beginnings!

🍂 1. Halloween has ancient roots!
The Celtic festival of Samhain marked the end of harvest and the beginning of winter. People believed the boundary between the living and spirit worlds grew thinner at this time of year.

🎭 2. Costumes weren’t originally just for fun!
Centuries ago, people wore disguises during seasonal celebrations, sometimes to protect themselves from wandering spirits. A little different from today’s princesses and superheroes!

🍬 3. Trick-or-treating has a long history!
Traditions such as souling and guising involved going door-to-door, sometimes offering prayers, songs, or performances in exchange for food or treats.

🎃 4. The original jack-o’-lanterns weren’t pumpkins!
In Ireland and Scotland, people carved spooky faces into TURNIPS! When the tradition traveled to America, pumpkins became the popular choice because they were plentiful and much easier to carve.

Can you imagine decorating your front porch with a bunch of creepy little turnips?!😂

👻🎃 Well, it’s officially October, and the ghosts have moved into the barn!

Went out tonight and discovered three sets of glowing eyes staring back at me from the darkness. The barn is haunted!

Ok, technically, it’s just my headlamp reflecting off the cats’ eyes… but where’s the fun in that?! 😂🐈‍⬛

Good thing I don’t spook easily, because feeding animals after dark around here could turn into a Halloween horror movie real quick!

🍂 FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🍂

Did you know decorating for fall can actually make your home feel cozier before you’ve changed the temperature at all?

Warm colors, natural textures, pumpkins, leaves and soft lighting all help create that cozy fall feeling. 🍁

And the best part? Fall décor doesn’t have to be orange! Turquoise, sage, cream, burgundy, navy and even pink can all be gorgeous mixed with traditional fall colors.

So if your pumpkins don’t match everyone else’s pumpkins… I fully support you. 😂🎃

Apparently the goats had a very productive day while we were gone. 😂

This morning I noticed one of the panels to their pen was a little loose, but not enough to worry about, especially since it’s inside the pasture and they can’t get out.

Mistake.

At some point, the goats rubbed on it enough to open it, one of the horses wandered into the goat pen… and then they somehow managed to rub it from the other side and close it again..

I knew she’d gotten into the goat pen earlier, but figured if she got herself in, she could get herself back out.

Fast forward to feeding time, which was late thanks to the days craziness, and I’m calling her because she’s usually standing at her bucket waiting for me, and I hear her whinnying from the goat pen like:

“Hello Mom, I’m over here. I have a problem.” 😂

As I’m walking out to release the horse and fix the panels I realize that the goats have untied the rope keeping the gate closed. I think I need a camera in the barn.

Not for security.

For goat shenanigans. 😂

☕ Apparently it’s National Coffee Day!

Perfect timing, because I stopped at Marengo Coffee House for my favorite Caramel Dream iced coffee.

I guess I should’ve taken the picture right after I got it… because I drank half of it on the way home. 😂 But with that red barn, blue sky and an absolutely gorgeous no-rain, no-gray-clouds kind of day, I think this picture worked out pretty well anyway!

Nothing like sunshine, good coffee and a little caffeine to fuel an afternoon of creating. 🌻

Same base. Two completely different looks!

I created these two samples while working on a custom wreath order, and I thought it would be fun to see which one YOU would choose.

🌿 #1 — lilies, ribbon and lots of cascading greenery
🌿 #2 — hydrangeas with a fuller, lush greenery design

My customer actually chose a combination of the two, which I think is going to be gorgeous!

But if these were hanging on your front door… would you choose #1 or #2? 😁

🐦 FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🌸

Since one of our little hummingbirds finally cooperated for a picture this week, I thought she deserved her own Fun Fact Friday! 😂

Did you know hummingbirds can actually learn who and where their food comes from?

They have excellent memories and can remember reliable food sources, including feeders and flower patches. Ours have definitely figured out where the food comes from — when the feeders need filled, they’ll come hover at the door like they’re putting in a service request. 😂

A few more fun hummingbird facts:

🌸 They can fly forward, backward and even upside down briefly.

💨 Their wings can beat dozens of times per second, depending on the species and what they’re doing.

🗺️ Ruby-throated hummingbirds — the species we usually see here in Ohio — make an incredible migration each year, with many crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single nonstop flight.

🌺 And despite loving that sweet nectar, they don’t live on sugar alone! They also eat tiny insects and spiders for protein.

This little girl still won’t let me move when she’s close, but we’re working on our friendship. 😂💕

September 11th is one of those days you never forget. 🇺🇸

My daughter was sick that day, so I had stayed home from work. I remember holding her and turning on the TV just before the second tower was hit. For a moment, I thought I had turned on some horrible movie. Then I realized it was real.

I remember the fear and heartbreak of that day, but I also remember what came afterward — flags everywhere, neighbors helping neighbors, and a country that came together when we needed each other most.

Twenty-five years later, I remember the lives lost, the heroes who ran toward danger, and the families whose lives were forever changed.

May we never forget them — or forget how much stronger we can be when we choose kindness, compassion and unity. ❤️🤍💙
