From outside it reflects the trees. From inside there is nothing between you and the view

The ÖÖD House arrived in Pebble Beach fully built and fully glazed, craned in over a site with no access for anything that size.

What we built is everything around it. The tiered deck, the raised planters, the rock-edged beds, and the siting itself, angled so the mirror catches the original shingle roofline and the trees behind it.

A modern glass box on a property full of cypress and cedar shake should not work. It does, because it spends all day reflecting them.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at one of our latest projects in Pebble Beach, California, where our team coordinated the delivery and crane installation of an ÖÖD House.

This unique addition is part of an extensive home remodel completed by Lewis Builders. Known for their modern design and distinctive glass architecture, ÖÖD structures offer an interesting way to add living space while maintaining a close connection to the surrounding landscape.

Carmel Homeowners: How do you know what you will see from a second floor that does not exist yet?

You build it. Temporarily.

Before this couple bought a vacant lot in Carmel, they wanted certainty on two things: that the house they had in mind would actually fit, and that the view would be worth it. So we raised an 18 foot story pole on the site and flew a drone to second story height to photograph exactly what they would be looking at.

Roughly 150 degrees across Carmel Valley, clearing the cypress across the street.

The study also confirmed a 2,500 square foot home would sit comfortably inside the Coastal Zone limits, and that water service could actually be connected, which is far from a given on the Peninsula.

They bought the lot.

The original house was under 2,000 square feet and needed everything. We took it nearly down to the foundation, kept the existing footprint, and built upward rather than outward. A vaulted ceiling, a new loft, oversized doorways, and windows positioned to pull the forest and the ocean inside.

Hand-hewn Douglas fir box beams, reclaimed and locally sourced. Tongue-and-groove pine floors, custom stained at the clients' request. The kitchen moved from an isolated corner to the middle of the house, where it now opens into the dining and family room.

Space is not square footage. It is how the square footage is arranged.
