The most common questions I get about my store are:
“How do you pronounce it?" (KooshLee)
"What does it mean?" The truth is, there isn't one perfect English translation.
People often say it means cozy, and that's part of it. But koselig is so much bigger than blankets, candles, and warm drinks.
For me, it started long before I knew there was a word for it.
It was sitting in my great grandma's house, where the coffee pot was always on and no one ever seemed to be in a hurry. It was stories told around the kitchen table and the comfort of knowing you belonged.
Years later, when I visited Norway, I realized that feeling had a name.
It was in the tiny cafés tucked between old streets. In the cabins overlooking the fjords. In the way people lingered over a meal instead of rushing through it. In quiet evenings, warm lights glowing through windows, and the simple belief that ordinary moments are worth slowing down for.
That's koselig (kooshlee).
It's feeling welcome before anyone says a word.
It's a conversation that lasts longer than you planned.
It's finding beauty in the everyday.
It's bringing home fresh flowers just because.
It's gathering around waffles on a Saturday morning.
It's buying a gift because someone came to mind.
It's taking the scenic route.
It's lighting the candle anyway.
When I opened Koselig at 106, I wasn't just choosing a name for a shop. I was choosing the feeling I hoped people would experience when they walked through the door.
Just a place where you could slow down for a little while...browse, visit, smile, remember a favorite recipe, discover a new tradition, or simply breathe a little deeper.
If you leave with a gift, that's wonderful.
But if you leave feeling a little lighter than when you came in...
Then we've shared a little koselig. And to me, that's the whole point. 🤍
