Disabled vet. ADHD success story — paying it forward to my uniquely wired tribe. Over-50 Disabled Veteran, West Point Graduate, & Inventor Creating Purposeful Products That Restore Independence and Dignity

I'm a West Point graduate, disabled Army veteran, and lifelong problem-solver. Over the years, I've built a career translating challenges into practical solutions—whether in rail, telecom, or l

ending. Each chapter taught me that innovation isn't about disruption for its own sake; it's about purpose, empathy, and endurance. Today, my work focuses on adaptive design and universal innovation—creating tools that empower independence and dignity for people navigating physical limitations, caregiving, or the transitions that come with aging. I lead a small, veteran-powered team of over-50 professionals who share the same philosophy: age and experience aren't liabilities—they're competitive advantages. We've led teams, raised families, and faced our own limitations. That lived experience drives everything we create. My path into adaptive innovation is deeply personal. Years of upper-extremity limitations—and time spent caring for my father—showed me how poorly everyday products serve people who need better tools. That realization led to NULU, an adaptive kitchen knife with reimagined cutting geometry that allows anyone—regardless of strength, dexterity, or mobility—to cut safely and confidently. It's about restoring control, not compromising ability. Alongside NULU, I'm developing new adaptive tools designed with the same principle: solve the neglected problems that affect millions of lives with respect, practicality, and purpose. Every product begins with lived experience and ends with thoughtful design that stands the test of time. I believe innovation should honor the people it serves. I don't move fast and break things—I move smart and build things that last. I am available for keynotes, workshops, and panels on resilience, innovation, and universal design: www.douglasmkatz.com

Fantastic 3 days for NULU at Abilities Expo Chicago. We wanted to provide updates but we were swamped the whole time.

Trade shows are always exhausting, but rarely as as this one. Someone actually said to us "Thank you for inventing this." To us, that is success and what keeps us going in the start up game.

NULU is so excited to see you at Abilities Expo, June 12-14 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center.

Swing by booth 429 to see demos and to try the NULU.

Save time and register for the show ahead of time at https://rebrand.ly/8xmys4l

Attendees will get a show discount and free safety cutting glove with purchase.

Last year at this time, we were unveiling NULU to the public for the first time after our Kickstarter.

Abilities Expo Chicago was where we did it — and getting in front of the people who benefit most from what we built provided both the validation and the inspiration that got us to where we are today.

We're back. If you're in the Chicago area June 12–14, come find us at Booth 429. It could transform your life in the kitchen — or the life of someone you love.

Day 3 at The Blade Show.

Our first Blade Show for NULU and it's been a really good one. I'm a little fried — but in the best way.

If you're here today, we're still honoring the 20% Blade Show discount on everything — knives and accessories. That's our show price for anyone who comes out to see us at table 34C.

Can't make it to Atlanta? First order ships with 15% off at nuluknives.com until the end of June.

And next week we head to the Abilities Expo in Schaumburg, IL — Booth 429, right by the food court. Doors open Friday June 12.

That show is where we did our hard launch — first time we put this knife in the hands of the community we built it for. Looking forward to being back. We'll be doing live demos and running show promotions. Come find us.

Check nuluknives.com for current promotions and updates as we roll into Schaumburg.

Day 2 at the Blade Show — Table 35C, Cobb Convention Center, Atlanta.

Yesterday was a great day. Sold knives, got real feedback, and spent time next to some of the most talented makers I've ever seen. Humbling.

A heads up if you're coming by today: Acacia cutting boards went fast — come early if you want one.

We still have Bamboo.
Show attendees get 20% off at the table.

Can't make it to the show but can't wait to get your NULU? Get 15% off your first order at nuluknives.com.

Come touch the product. I think you'll walk away with one. See you on the floor.

I am headed to The Blade Show in Atlanta for NULU, so I am posting this week's Q&A-DHD early.

I found a question about being corrected and anger — and several things peaked my interest.

Three things in the question told me everything before I even started answering.

The passive framing. The assumption that others should recognize your expertise. And an apology at the end before anyone even responded.

That's not soley ADHD. That's a framework problem.

This week's Q&A-DHD breaks down the two-layer approach

I actually use — Zen to create the pause, Stoicism to work within it — and the strategic truth that there is no destination.

Only the practice.
