Finishing up a few projects as it warms up. Here’s another cedar hope chest that we got done with yesterday evening. At this point, we pick these up just because we love the smell of cedar in the air…damn the fact that you’re cleaning red dust out of your nose, ears, and beard for a week. Haha. We got this chest in fair shape, but found that a lot of the wood was cut uneven. Not to mention, that whoever varnished it did so with malicious intent towards anyone else’s sanding equipment. We basically had to melt it off. It was impressive, dude. After a good stripping, cleaning up some water damage, finding a nice little surprise of ruined veneer and screws so long that they jut out the back, we got this beautiful piece restored with a wipe-on polyurethane layered on thicc. We prefer the look and feel of a polyurethane over a varnish because varnish tends to tint the wood and create a thick, glossy film where polyurethane soaks into the wood leaving decent protection while making the grain and color pop with a natural beauty.
