LET’S HAVE A CHIT CHAT!

Today we are talking about living with children and nice things …. and no, this is not a fairytale. It is possible… most days.

One of the questions I get asked all the time is: “Does your coffee table really always look like that?”

The answer is yes! But before anyone thinks I’m claiming to live in a museum with perfectly behaved children, let me be clear: we are still a very real, very loud, very sticky-fingered house.

But over time, my kids have mostly learned what is and isn’t for touching. A big part of that is because the pretty things are not brand new and exciting to them anymore — they’ve seen them, they’re used to them, and they know they are part of our home, not toys.

So today I’m sharing a few tips for living beautifully with children, setting realistic boundaries, and keeping little paws off your treasures… at least most of the time.

Because you can have a kid-friendly home without completely surrendering to the toy aisle.

Hostess Tip 🌸 Nothing kills the dinner party vibe faster than the conversation at the table starting to lag.

My foolproof fix? Ask everyone: “If you could only have 3 cheeses for the rest of your life, what would you pick?”

A little oddball? Sure. The best questions usually are. Never underestimate people’s love of cheese… or their desire to prove they’re right. Somehow this one gets even the shyest strangers chatting.

For an equally spirited debate, follow it up with: “Favorite breakfast cereal of all time?”

Proof that dining rooms can be just as dressed up as the guests. This lampshade is pulling out all the stops- smocked pleats, perfect silk, a pop of micro cord, a fabulous finial, and tassels to tie it all together. It’s the little details that are the icing on the cake (and our favorite part of the design process). 🍰
