Giberto Venezia glass is made in Murano’s furnaces, the way Venetian glass has been made for centuries.⁠
⁠
In 1291, Venice moved its glassmakers to the island of Murano because their furnaces were a fire risk to the city. There were once more than 300 furnaces there. About 60 are left. They run at around 1,400°C and are kept lit around the clock, since a furnace that goes cold can crack its crucible.⁠

Count Giberto draws each piece as a watercolor, and Murano master glassmakers blow his designs by hand. The ridges on the Fizzy glasses come from blowing the glass into a grooved bronze mould. The rims, and the handle on the Laguna carafe, are sealed on by hand while the glass is still hot. The Palazzo glasses are engraved by hand with the façades of Venetian palaces.⁠

Horticulturist and floral designer Sara York Grimshaw (Sara York Grimshaw) takes us out to her farm on Wadmalaw Island.

In the latest edition of House Calls, we visit Sara among the plants she grows, cuts, and arranges. Nearly one hundred trees in, the farm is part garden, part growing ground, with much of it planted for what will eventually make its way into her work.
