DESIGNBAR We are DESIGNBAR, a fresh and creative squad with a passion for
designing commercial spaces that enrich the human experience.

Founded in 2009 by Monika Nessbach, Designbar has focused
on elevating the client experience by bringing spaces to life and
telling more of a company’s story. The creative style for Designbar
draws on the modern influences of Monika’s youth and formal
education while also harnessing the urge to break the rules and
reimagine the possibilities. Today, Designbar has three client focuses within the commercial
building industry — Live (Multi-Family and Hotels), Play
(Hospitality), and Work (Corporate Offices). We also give back to
our community by supporting causes that are near and dear to our
hearts, Second Chance Animal Rescue, and the advancement of
Women in Business.

Before any upholstery goes on a chair in a restaurant, hotel or amenity space, flip the sample. The back tells you what the front won’t:

🔹 Abrasion: how many double rubs before it wears through. Heavy-duty contract starts at 30,000. This one? 115,000.

Instead of treating banquettes as a basic functional element, we approach them as sculptural features integrated directly into the architecture of a space.

✨ The details matter
Channel tufting, contrast piping, stitching, curved forms—there are endless ways to customize a banquette and make it feel intentional to the brand and environment.

📐 Curves instantly elevate
Integrating softer forms into banquette design creates movement, comfort, and a more elevated spatial experience.

Some of the most impactful lighting moments are the ones quietly built into the architecture—hidden recessed cove lighting, millwork illumination, toe-kick lighting, niches, and layered uplighting/downlighting.

✨ Design it from the beginning
At DESIGNBAR, lighting conversations start during the schematic phase. Integrating it early allows the entire space to be shaped around atmosphere, emotion, and experience.

Before aesthetics, tile selection comes down to performance. Floor vs wall, slip resistance, durability, and even cleanability all play a role in what actually works.

🧼 Maintenance matters
Smaller tiles mean more grout, which means more upkeep. Large format options can simplify cleaning and create a more seamless look, depending on the environment.

🎯 Trend vs intention
Tile is one of the easiest ways to fall into “copy and paste” design. Trends exist for a reason, but without intention, they can quickly feel dated.

⚖️ What lasts and what fades
Bold patterns may feel exciting now, but not all will age well. Classic applications like stacked horizontal or vertical layouts have proven their longevity across decades.

In honor of Earth Day yesterday, the Designbar team spent time volunteering at Innovation Barn CLT 🌎

The idea was to weave sound panels made from misprinted T-shirts—materials that would have otherwise gone to waste, now repurposed into something functional and impactful.

It’s a small reminder that thoughtful design doesn’t always start with new materials. Sometimes, it starts with rethinking what already exists. ♻️

Let’s talk about the fifth wall. 👇

🏢 The missed opportunity
In commercial design, ceilings are often treated as an afterthought. Left exposed, painted over, or ignored entirely.

🎨 Where design can differentiate
A treated ceiling adds drama, defines zones, and instantly elevates a space from standard to custom. Wood paneling, sculptural tiles, beams, wallpaper, and even overlooked elements can become features when approached with intention.

🔄 What we’ve done instead
At one of our downtown projects, we reimagined unattractive acoustical panels by wrapping them in string—transforming an eyesore into a feature. At Runaway Wh***ey & W**e in Charlotte, a dropped ceiling element creates a bold, intentional moment that anchors and defines the space.

The best spaces don’t stop where your eyes naturally go.
They give you a reason to look up. ✨
