A gallery like ours really does live and breathe through the community around it, and today we’re celebrating 4,000 of you following along.

This week’s featured artist is Gabby Kerson of Raging Buffalo Glass. 🔥

Gabby started blowing glass at 16 years old in Waterbury, Vermont. She returned to Charlottesville in 2023 and now works out of Charles Hall located at Stufio 7 at McGuffey Art Center

Using multiple techniques and layers of color, Gabby creates glasswork with a remarkable sense of depth, where color, form and light all become part of the piece. These beautiful vases are just a few examples of her work.

Gabby is one of several gifted glassblowers at Raging Buffalo, whose work we’re proud to feature at the gallery. Their Charlottesville studio also welcomes the community with glassblowing classes and hands-on experiences.

This week, we’re proud to feature one of our own, Carolyn Brandt. A familiar face at the gallery, Carolyn is also an incredibly talented local artist and sculptor working primarily in stone. 
 
In Carolyn’s own words: 
 
“Carving stone is a lesson in patience. It is also a lesson in a different kind of listening, not necessarily with the ears, but with the eyes and hands. Anyone who works with stone will tell you that there is some form of communication that goes on once they begin to manipulate it. Often I start with a particular piece in mind only to have what I’ve envisioned transform into something else, seemingly dictated by the stone itself. 
 
People are drawn to touch a smoothed stone—they crave the cool, liquid feeling of it against their skin. The same desire that motivates me to reach out to stroke a dog’s head. Dogs and other animals are ever present characters in my pieces. My focus is often drawn to one aspect of their physique that intrigues me—a nose, the ears, the eyes, and in humans the hands. I sometimes add found elements of nature to my sculptures such as antler, bone and skins to give further dimension to their stories and connectivity to the natural world.”

Happy Friday, everyone! This week, we’d like to honor the late and talented artist Edward Thomas (1972–2021). He was a Charlottesville painter, architect, and historian whose work beautifully documented the place he called home.  
 
Thomas studied architecture and painting at the University of Virginia and architecture at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. He was also a longtime student of Charlottesville painter Richard Crozier, studying with him from 1991 until Thomas’s death in 2021. 
 
With a folding easel and oil paints, Thomas worked directly from observation throughout Charlottesville and Central Virginia. His paintings captured Charlottesville as it was, from open fields and familiar streets to construction sites and changing landscapes, creating a record of the region as it evolved around him.

“Perpetual Revival” by Vladimir Kush is a twilight dreamscape that practically glows on the wall.
 
Painted in 2013, this original oil exemplifies Kush’s “Metaphorical Realism,” blending familiar imagery into surreal visual metaphors. Here, a mountain takes the form of an enormous snail, its cloud-like shell spiraling above a sprawling city. The snail evokes slow, steady progress, while the rotating spiral gives the landscape a sense of perpetual motion. 
 
In 2012, Kush received First Prize in Painting at the Artistes du Monde international exhibition in Cannes.

Happy Friday! 👋

The artwork sold from the artist we were hoping to feature today, so we’ll hold off till next week. Until then, here’s one of our favorite customers.

This is Wally, and he’s in to see us at least a couple times a week while he and his dad stroll the mall. He appreciates the art, and our treats behind the counter. well behaved dogs welcome 🐾❤️
