Limb-loss is a serious health issue that affects millions of people in the developing world. According to the World Health Organization and a recent ATscale Report, there are 52 million amputees living in low- and middle-income countries, and only 10% of them have access to prosthetic care. This means that 90% of them are left without adequate support to cope with their disability.
The lack of prosthetic care has a devastating impact on the quality of life of amputees. They face social stigma, isolation, and discrimination. They are unable to work, study, or participate in family and community activities. They suffer from physical and mental health problems, such as chronic pain, infections, depression, and anxiety. They are also more vulnerable to poverty, violence, and abuse.
The problem is not going away. In fact, it is getting worse. The ATscale Report estimates that 1.2 million more amputations, mostly lower limb, will occur each year in under-resourced communities. This is due to various factors, such as road accidents, diabetes ( #1 cause in Barbados), infections, landmines, and armed conflicts.
-- This is why It is so important to help the amputees in Barbados. Stand with me as I prepare to do just that in the next few months.
