A change in the garden...
It feels like every year we learn more and more. This year, we decided that we want a more regenerative approach, as the areas we have tested seem to adapt better to the extreme conditions from the weather, and grow happier plants...
This weekend we put a bit more labor in for Labor Day...
we are prepping for fall and trying to build the soil health further for next year. We want to keep the moisture, allow for the microbes in the soil to remain and grow to create a healthy network.
What all did we do?... some can be seen, and some is not as recognizable to the eye but is definitely part of our gardening journey:
**We added rabbit manure from Swafford Family Ranch & Triple E Rabbitry for a balanced fertilizer and organic matter to the beds.
**We started to add more and better quality drip lines with more coverage for more water retention, and more effective, deep watering.
**We removed landscape fabric from the rows and replaced walkways with mulch. Our mulch is on the far side of the yard where it could be dropped so this will be a continuous effort over the next few mornings and evenings to clear the w**ds and mulch the walkways on the rest of the rows. We moved approximately 30 full 5 gallon buckets of mulch from the mulch pile and probably have hundreds to go.
**We planted heavier. Ignoring spacing to cover more soil in the grow out, shade the plants that are sensitive but with companions that replace some of the nutrients, break up the soil, or help repel pests.
**We utilized shade cloth to help refreshed beds not lose all their moisture and allow the sensitive seedlings to get adjusted in their new homes. This will be removed in a week or so.
**We planted seeds. Some are purposefully placed so we can try to grow the produce to eat, preserve, and sell. Some seeds were sprinkled generously to build soil with nutrients and cover the beds, to be used as living mulch later for future crops that need to overwinter in the ground.
Thank you for being here to support us and purchase the literal fruits and veggies of our labor.
We hope that sharing our journey and struggles to learn ways to prevent plant disease, pest control, and be able to harvest the best tasting and naturally grown produce continues to provide you with the confidence in knowing that the food you get from us, is produced in the healthiest conditions for consumers as well as the land we cultivate.
As we continue to expand, grow, and learn, we hope to add more and more products for folks to enjoy year round.... weather permitted, as we garden completely outdoors in the elements and are attempting to build a garden that has extended growing seasons based on the proper crops being planted for our planting zone.
