An important aspect of beekeeping is TIMING.
For example:
- when to split a colony in spring to prevent swarming;
- when to add more hive boxes to give them more room;
- when to remove super (honey) boxes at the end of summer or when to leave them on just a little longer for fully sealed honeycomb
- when to add a 2nd deep hive box, while there is still enough blooming for the colony to collect & store food for winter;
- when to collect, clean and store emptied frames before any other bugs get to them;
- when to supplement food in winter in case the bees have finished everything they stored;
and so many other things to keep track of…(all of which will differ for beekeepers in different regions and climates, and changes every year with different weather patterns!)
We’re wrapping up our final round of honey harvesting from all locations this season, with plenty of work still ahead, but happy we and the bees have made it this far - we take none of it for granted!
