Lintels & Lallies

Lintels & Lallies Let’s design together & find purpose in your place. Barbara Ann speaks and writes about such topics through various platforms. By Appointment

Award-winning interior design & workshops rooted in a simple belief: a home is not merely a thing to make beautiful, but a thing entrusted to us—to love those within it and glorify the One who gave it. Barbara Ann is the founder, owner, and lead designer of both Lintels & Lallies & “design MAGNIFIED” (a division of L&L teaching Biblical design.) Barbara Ann believes every good design begins on the foundation of God our Creator, and the study of His designs and desires for our homes.

This feather has such a soft warmth to it. I had to pull out the color decks. Delicate stippling of a muted brown—almost the illusion of being grey.

And this is just one feather. God loves you so much more. Think of all the details He placed on your life!

I’m working out flooring finishes—finding just the right undertones. Herringbone will forever be my favorite orientation.

It’s timeless for a reason—it’s found in God’s creation.

Even its names point back to creation.

The Romans referenced an ear of grain, while the English saw the delicate bones of a herring. Historically, the pattern wasn’t just beautiful—it added strength. I was surprised to see it in ancient ruins while visiting Italy!

See what I’m working on below, and up close pattern in creation and the foundation detail I saw in Italy:

A little piece of our “Holmestead.”

I remember going to a dinner theater when I was a teenager to see *The Secret Garden*. I was amazed at how they transformed the room into a garden! I watched the movie a lot when I was little, too.

There’s something beautiful about the idea of stumbling across something secret and mysterious in creation—discovering beauty and nurturing it back to life. And woven through the story is this beautiful picture of encouraging and challenging one another to do hard things, while being open to a softened heart and healing.

I don’t have tall hedge walls, but we have a feast of flowers right now that delights my imagination!

We built our home 17 years ago, and over time, we’ve continued adding to the landscape. My favorite addition is our prayer garden. I don’t sit in it as often as I’d like, but I do spend time there with intention.

It’s tucked away in my backyard, and it’s one of the many little “secret” places I go to on our property.

Maybe that’s part of what I love about a home—creating places that invite you to discover, linger, pray, heal, and notice the beauty God has been growing all along.

Do you have special spaces outdoors to visit as well as indoors?

One of the things I looked forward to most in Italy was studying its sacred spaces.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of designing and coming alongside several churches, so I was eager to see how Italy preserves centuries of architecture while thoughtfully integrating modern updates like lighting and sound.

Below are a few photos highlighting some of those modern updates. St. Peter's Basilica was my favorite from a design perspective. Even the speakers were intentionally painted by an artist to blend seamlessly into the marble walls.

While studying the Duomo in Milan, our guide made a statement that has stayed with me: **"This church is never done."** I smiled because the same is true of us. Just as the Body of Christ is continually being refined until the Lord calls us home, our buildings and homes require ongoing care, maintenance, and growth.

There's so much more I'd love to share about the architecture and sacred spaces of Italy, but I'll save those stories for a future book. 😊

Can you sit and notice? Study the architecture, the details both small and large. I will continue to share more of our trip—but here are some highlights from a couple earlier days. We studied architecture, foundations, archeology, the most glamorous and the most ancient. Old and new residing together. Texture, light, color—sounds, fragrance and taste. Italy was a feast for the creative soul!

We have stories to tell, lessons to share, and more photos than we know what to do with—but for now, enjoy some of the colors, textures, patterns, and craftsmanship we've discovered during our first days in Italy. Beauty is often found in the details.

For the next two weeks, Lintels & Lallies will be a little quieter than usual as our family takes a much-needed break to refresh, rest, and take in the beauty and history of Italy.

As designers, we are constantly inspired by the work of God's hands and the creativity of people throughout history. From architecture and craftsmanship to art, light, color, and culture, we look forward to filling our hearts and sketchbooks with inspiration.

We'll be sharing a few sights along the way, but mostly we'll be enjoying time together as a family and returning with fresh eyes, renewed hearts, and new ideas.

Thank you for being here and supporting our journey. We'll see you soon!

Blessings~
Barbara Ann
