If you knock on a willow tree, it is said to send away bad luck and that's where the custom of 'touch wood' or 'knock on wood' originated. European people also believed the wind in the willow leaves were elves who whispered and talked among themselves as people were passing underneath. This whole touching or knocking on wood stems from the belief that all trees have a spirit and you're appeasing them by knocking and asking to enter their woods. It's always wise to ask for permission.
