Simple Shapes Linocut Reduction Prints
(DIY multi-color stamps)
Sunday June 14th
4:15 -6:15PM
Letās carve & print a reduction print!
What is a reduction print you ask? Itās a way to get multiple colors on a print by carving away or āreducingā the block. For example, you carve the outline of the profile of a bird & carve away everything on the outside of the image. You ink the bird in yellow. You print the bird 10 times using yellow ink.
You want the wing to be navy blue. Everything that you want to stay yellow (the birdās head & its back), you carve away. You print the wing & its lower body in navy blue on top of the dry yellow prints. Now you have a bird with a yellow head & back & a blue wing & bottom half.
You want the belly of the bird to be orange. You carve away the wing, now you only have the belly & legs left. You print the belly & legs in orange on top of the yellow & blue bird.
Now you have a yellow, blue, & orange bird print! You might want to think about details too, but it was too much for this example ;).
If that didnāt make sense - not to worry - weāll be making something much less complicated.
Weāll design a simple geometric, abstract image & transfer it to the pink Speedy Carve block. Weāll start with 10 prints so that we hopefully end up with at least 3 good ones. Iāll teach you how to carve the block & weāll print using stamp pads on paper. The goal is to end up with multiple 3-color prints.
Iāll provide all of the materials. Once you know how it works, youāll be able to do it again with a more complicated design. And youāll always have access to me if you have any questions!
