One of the questions I get asked most often by clients is: What color should I choose for my main furniture pieces, especially in a home with children? What is easier to maintain, what will age well, and what will be easier to decorate around over time?
Personally, I’m always drawn to soft beige and warm neutral tones for the main furniture pieces. I find them timeless, elegant, and incredibly versatile. They create a beautiful foundation and give you so much more freedom to play with different colors, textures, and finishes as your home evolves.
Darker furniture :black, charcoal, or very deep brown — can absolutely be beautiful, but I find it a little more challenging to work around. It can visually weigh down a space, limit your options when introducing other pieces like a buffet or credenza, and darker surfaces often show dust, fingerprints, and everyday marks more easily.
Especially in a home with children, I personally prefer warm neutrals and medium-light tones. They tend to be more forgiving for everyday living while still keeping the space feeling light, sophisticated, and inviting.
And this is probably my favorite part about starting with a neutral foundation: you can completely transform the feeling of a room through your accent colors. In my own beige-toned space, I love bringing in shades of burgundy, dusty pink, and fig. They add richness, warmth, and just the right amount of personality while still allowing the room to feel balanced and timeless.
For me, choosing neutral furniture has never meant choosing something boring. It means creating a foundation that gives you the freedom to layer, evolve, and fall in love with your space again and again.
