Letās talk about materials. I am going to encourage you - no beg you - to let some items in your house be designed to look lived in. Natural materials - the good stuff - ages. It wrinkles, it stretches - maybe it even discolors. I donāt mean everything in your house - I love Crypton fabrics too! - but layering in a few pieces designed to age really elevates the space. We are attracted to things (and people!) that age well!
Think velvet softened and worn on the edges, leather chairs with darker arms from many hands, wool rugs with the nap shortened from running feet and lots of visitors, wood furniture with soft wear around the hardware.
Not sure? Think about walking through Rome (or Paris or any ancient place) - would it have the same feel, the same heart, if everything was sparkling and new? No, of course not. The beauty is inherent, but it is elevated, multiplied, by the years.
Thereās a reason companies design things to look pre-aged. Itās why we love antiques so much. Wear - living - gives the pieces soul. I really encourage you to select pieces in real materials and let your own family write its history.
The leather chairs here have porous leather. It needs to occasionally be oiled, it will show spots and wear. I will admit the first times do feel startling - but eventually they will develop a patina that cannot be replicated. A patina that shows life - and love! ;)
