Let’s talk about materials. I am going to encourage you - no beg you - to let some items in your house be designed to look lived in. Natural materials - the good stuff - ages. It wrinkles, it stretches - maybe it even discolors. I don’t mean everything in your house - I love Crypton fabrics too! - but layering in a few pieces designed to age really elevates the space. We are attracted to things (and people!) that age well!

Think velvet softened and worn on the edges, leather chairs with darker arms from many hands, wool rugs with the nap shortened from running feet and lots of visitors, wood furniture with soft wear around the hardware.

Not sure? Think about walking through Rome (or Paris or any ancient place) - would it have the same feel, the same heart, if everything was sparkling and new? No, of course not. The beauty is inherent, but it is elevated, multiplied, by the years.

There’s a reason companies design things to look pre-aged. It’s why we love antiques so much. Wear - living - gives the pieces soul. I really encourage you to select pieces in real materials and let your own family write its history.

The leather chairs here have porous leather. It needs to occasionally be oiled, it will show spots and wear. I will admit the first times do feel startling - but eventually they will develop a patina that cannot be replicated. A patina that shows life - and love! ;)

Little visual break - how cute is this silver crab?? I love tucking little creatures around. Playful, but not childish. A beautiful piece? Yes. Still fun? Also yes.

Oh and - - start over.

Just a quick thought about how inspiration translates to a project.

This building in Genoa has been a favorite image of mine for years. The building is striking without being over the top or colorful or shouting out in any of the typical ways. It shows you how you can add a lot of interest with a simple pattern - even done in neutral, earthy colors.
Striking, but not showy.

(Not that there’s anything wrong with something showy either! It all depends on what we’re looking for, what vibe we’re trying to create. Here - soft, simple, classic was the brief ;)

Okay - bedroom cozy corners are one of my very favorite things. Even if the area is small, if there’s a way to add it, I always recommend it. It goes back to how do we live here? How do we live in this space? What smaller things do we need some space for? In almost every home someone can use a quiet spot to talk on the phone, to read for a few minutes, or just have a second to sit that is a way from the main area. It’s especially true if you have kids big kids, little kids - even grown kids - doesn’t matter! Sometimes the bedroom is a perfect spot to have a relaxed heart-to-heart conversation, to just settle in and chat for a minute, in a space that takes you out of the sort of ā€˜public domain’. So make it soft, make it inviting, with good textures, comfy seats, and a (really cute!) little light ;) *note - I get that this is an objectively pretty awful photo - but I decided to just post - we’re all tired of overly staged, probably AI photos anyway, right? Right?!?
