Hiiii! So we thought weβd feature a couple of the orgs we designated for donations to give y'all more info about what they actually do!
First up, Rogers Park Food Not Bombs!
I love the entire mission of Food Not Bombs, and the Rogers Park branch is an autonomous branch of the larger organization. Food Not Bombs is a non-profit that focuses on harm reduction and rescuing food from the waste stream to feed our neighbors.
This means they are collecting food from bakeries, grocery stores, etc that would otherwise be thrown out. They do a hot meal in Touhy park every Wednesday evening that all neighbors are welcome to come and eat at, no questions asked. They also do food distribution on Sundays, currently near PO Box Collective on Glenwood in Rogers park.
They've also recently been collecting funds to help put our homeless neighbors into hotel rooms during the cold snaps we've been having in Chicago, and are always raising funds to purchase Ventra cards for our neighbors in need. Additionally, they often host warming or cooling centers out of PO Box Collective during times of extreme weather, where any neighbors are welcome to come and be in community with each other away from the elements. They'll usually have hot food, coffee, water, and other snacks, along with hand warmers and fresh socks for those who need them during the cold months. You'll also often see them posting about coat drives in the winter.
I love the work Food Not Bombs does! They are also the only org I could find after my Nonnie passed, to take her packets of ni****ne gum she had left behind. (π But also big YAY to harm reduction!)
You can read more about what they use donated funds for on their site, which is in my linktree with all of the other donation pages.
