Designing themed kids’ spaces can be fun without feeling kitschy. When done thoughtfully, a room can feel playful yet elevated—complementing the overall style of the home and appealing to adults as well.

This philosophy guides my work across all projects, especially when designing themed spaces for Airbnbs: timeless, intentional, and beautifully layered.

Create a Disney-Themed Airbnb That Feels High-End, Not Cheesy!

Theming your Airbnb is a powerful way to stand out and tell a story that immerses your guests in their destination. This can be done in a way that is neither kitschy nor overwhelming.

With this Disney Princess concept, I embraced the art of subtlety to prove that a themed Airbnb can still look elevated and luxurious.

Here’s how I did it:

When designing Airbnbs, I fully support theming,but theming doesn’t have to mean kitschy. Avoid overdone clichés like plastic palm trees, overused parrot motifs, and neon signs. Instead, aim for timeless elegance that seamlessly integrates the natural beauty of your location while offering a unique, memorable guest experience.

Here are two tropical concepts that strike the perfect balance between theming and sophistication:

🌴 Option 1: Moody Tropical Speakeasy
Envision lush greenery paired with vintage-style rattan furniture, all illuminated by dim, golden lighting. Add luxurious touches like brass accents, velvet upholstery, and textured wallpaper. A chic cocktail corner stocked with artisanal glassware completes the space, making your Airbnb a true oasis of style.

🌺 Option 2: Miami-Inspired Art Deco

Movies are my go-to source of inspiration for Airbnb design concepts, and what could be better than a Nancy Meyers movie?

For this design concept, I recreated the cozy charm of Iris’s English cottage from The Holiday, adding a modern, hospitable twist perfect for Airbnb guests.

Here’s how I captured that iconic cottage style while making it functional and guest-friendly:

Timeless Cottage Charm:

*Layer soft, vintage-inspired textiles with modern comforts. Think plush throw blankets, floral patterns, and warm, earthy tones.

*Mix-and-match antique furniture pieces with contemporary designs for that eclectic English feel.

*Add cozy touches like a crackling fireplace, stacked books, and twinkling fairy lights to set the mood.

Hotel-Grade Luxury:

*Provide premium linens and fluffy pillows for a restful night’s sleep.

*Stock spa-quality toiletries and add thoughtful touches like cozy robes and slippers.

Modern Amenities:

*Discreetly incorporate USB outlets to keep guests connected without compromising aesthetics.
