Happy 105th birthday to two grand old ladies: the Drake Hotel of Chicago and Mangel Florist, which opened on January 1, 1921, the day after Benjamin Marshall’s beautiful hotel welcomed its first guests and tenants. One can scarcely imagine all of the characters who have passed through both the hotel’s and florist’s doors, but let it suffice to say that the parade of humanity welcomed by both could tell much of the history of this city and nation in the last century. In our short nine years as owners of Mangel Florist, we have served billionaires and jewelers; universities and charities; famous actors and artists; journalists and athletes; and all manner of neighbors and travelers from near and far. What a parade of humanity and what a joy to witness it all firsthand! Here’s to a bright future for both Mangel Florist and its iconic home. 🌸
