Unpopular opinion: putting expensive things everywhere doesn’t make an interior luxurious.

Sometimes it does the opposite.

Luxury isn’t a marble wall, a designer chandelier and custom millwork all fighting to be noticed in the same room.

Luxury is knowing what deserves attention and what doesn’t.

It’s proportion. Materiality. Craftsmanship. A beautiful transition between stone and wood. The right scale. The right light. And the confidence to leave some things quiet.

Not every wall needs to be a moment.

When everything is a statement, nothing is.

If you want to understand restraint, study Thomas Pheasant and Simply Serene. His work is a masterclass in how powerful a room can be without shouting.

Expensive is a price point.
Luxury is a feeling.

And the best luxury whispers.

What you wear. What you collect. What you reach for every day. What deserves to be displayed, and what should disappear behind a beautiful door.

That is the difference between adding storage and designing a home around its owner.

A luxury kitchen doesn’t need every element competing for attention.

Here, the stone hood became the focal point, so everything around it was designed to support it: warm wood cabinetry, restrained brass details and stone carried through the island.

The lesson? When you’re deciding where to invest, don’t upgrade everything equally. Decide what deserves to be the moment.

That’s where good design starts.

The older I get, the more I realize that the most valuable things in our homes are not always the most expensive ones.

They’re the things with a story.

A piece brought home from a trip. Art that reminds you of a certain time in your life. Something your child made. An old chair you still love. An object that may mean absolutely nothing to anyone else, but everything to you.

When I walk into a home, I don’t immediately think about what should be replaced.

I want to know what matters.

Because good design shouldn’t erase the life that was there before it.

It should make room for it.

A beautiful home shouldn’t look like it could belong to anyone.

It should feel unmistakably yours.

I think the meaning of luxury changes as we move through life.

At some point, having more stops being the goal.

We start wanting more time. Less stress. A quiet morning. A home that feels peaceful when we walk through the door. A kitchen where friends stay longer than they planned. A comfortable place to read. Someone we love beside us. A bedroom where the day finally becomes quiet.

Maybe that’s why I look at homes differently now.

The beautiful stone, the furniture, the lighting, the details, they matter. But only because of what they create around us.

A place to live our actual lives.

Maybe luxury isn’t having more.

Maybe luxury is having less to worry about, more time to enjoy, and people we love to share it with.

And perhaps that’s what we really need from life.

Luxury isn’t about adding more. It’s about making every detail feel intentional.

The cabinetry. The lighting. The hardware. The materials. The proportions. Each decision becomes part of the bigger picture.

That’s why we believe in designing the details before we build them. Because great interiors don’t happen by accident.

Most of my clients have great taste. They know what they like, they save beautiful inspiration, and many of them already have wonderful ideas before I ever walk through the door.

The difficult part isn’t choosing beautiful things.

It’s knowing how one decision will affect the next one.

A slightly larger sofa changes the lighting location. A different countertop changes the cabinet details. Moving a wall may affect electrical, flooring, furniture placement and sometimes the budget.

That’s really what years of experience teach you. Not simply what to choose, but how to see the whole picture before all the individual pieces are in place.

So if you’re designing your own home, my advice is simple: don’t make each decision in isolation. Keep stepping back and asking, How will this affect everything else?

Luxury isn’t one expensive material or one beautiful piece.

It’s what happens when the cabinetry, lighting, hardware, proportions and finishes are considered together, before construction begins.
