As much as I love finding a textile I’ve never seen before, there’s something interesting about patterns that have remained relevant for hundreds of years. Toile de Jouy became wildly popular in the late 18th century, traditionally with monochromatic scenes printed on a light background.

It’s storytelling through pattern, which is probably why it has had such staying power. And here we are, still putting toile on the walls, just in a modern way.

Knowing what you don’t like can be just as useful as knowing what you do.

We ask clients a lot of questions at the beginning of a project, and some of the most helpful answers are the immediate no’s. A color you’ve never liked, a material that feels too precious, a room you love but would never want to live in. Those reactions tell us something.

You don’t need to come to us with a perfectly defined style or a folder of inspiration that all makes sense together. Part of our job is figuring out the through line between what you’re drawn to, what you avoid, and how you actually want your home to feel. The specifics are usually where things start to get interesting.

A room without friction is a room without feeling. The balance is what⁠ makes it livable. The tension is what makes it memorable.⁠

This primary suite really shows that. The bedroom stays soft and quiet. A canopy bed, layered bedding, a little moody but still calm. The bathroom leans all the way in. Pink and iridescent tile, marble floors, an oxblood vanity. More is more, in the best way.⁠

There's a new Interior Motives Substack out tomorrow. This one is about how I build a design concept, and how a client’s tastes, needs, and sometimes conflicting ideas start to form a story for their home.

These three rooms from our Lakeshore project are at the front of the unit and all face the lake, but each has its own personality. I don’t think a home needs one overarching theme and we love to assign a specific purpose and vibe to each room.

The best results come when we’re able to think about the home as a whole. A floor plan affects the cabinetry, the cabinetry affects the lighting, and all of it eventually affects the furniture, color, art, and details that make the house feel like you.

That’s why most of our work is comprehensive, whether we’re renovating an existing home, starting from the ground up, or furnishing a home in its entirety. We work alongside the architects, builders, and craftspeople involved so we can follow those decisions all the way through.

Still very into this pink bathroom. The iridescent pink tile, marbled floor, burgundy vanity with oversized white hardware... there’s a lot going on, but it all works together.

Our client is a self-proclaimed bath person, so we gave the tub its own tiled arch and added French shower doors, which I’m now convinced every shower needs. We also refinished their vintage dental chest for a little patina and some very necessary storage.

Very thankful for clients who trust us enough to really go for it.

A peek at what we’ve been working on for one of the kids bedrooms at our Hinsdale Tudor.

Our client asked for cozy, playful, and creative, with a preference for greens, browns, and purples. We designed the room to feel youthful now, but not something he’ll quickly grow out of, with space for homework, hobbies, and plenty of cozy spots to hang out with his cat. We also carried some of the bolder choices into his bathroom.

The house is still under construction, but with drywall going up, I’m starting to count down to install in early 2027.

Every special historic home we work is also our client. At our Humboldt project, there was already plenty to respond to: the original wood trim, stained glass, lighting, and all of the character that had accumulated over time.

We never want to walk into a home with a look we’ve already decided on. We start with what’s there, figure out what’s worth preserving, and let those details help shape what comes next. The house is part of the equation, just as much as the people who live there.
