A light oak Japandi kitchen for a Scandinavian-style home in Arlington, Texas.

The homeowners wanted oak without the orange tone it usually has, so we developed a custom light stain for rift-cut veneer. The fridge and dishwasher sit behind oak panels, the hood is built into the matte off-white uppers, and the oak fronts open with solid-wood pulls.

The same oak continues into a built-in bar in the dining room.

Dark oak shaped the character of this Japandi kitchen in Gabrovo, making the space feel warm and grounded.

Natural light from the garden allowed the homeowners to choose a deeper wood tone without making the room feel heavy. Neolith Pietra di Piombo runs across the countertop, full-height backsplash, and island waterfall, completing the restrained palette.

The main wall took a little more thought. Because the homeowners cook often, open shelving initially seemed impractical. Moving tableware closer to the dining area and food storage into the pantry allowed them to remove the upper cabinets without sacrificing function.

Now, one long illuminated shelf and a visible stainless-steel hood define the open wall beneath the concrete ceiling. When the revised drawings were ready, the homeowners said the kitchen looked “much more like a minimalist kitchen.

For this Scandinavian-style kitchen in Boston, we paired warm oak cabinetry with pale stone and slim white tile. The island is large, so we rounded one end to keep it from feeling too heavy. We used rift-cut oak veneer in a custom mid-tone finish for the fronts, with beveled edges forming integrated finger pulls.

A rounded island sets the rhythm of this Japandi kitchen. It softens the geometry and makes the space easier to move through.

From there, the details become quieter. The lowered solid-wood handle adds a tactile element across the cabinetry, while natural stone introduces variation against the warm wood tones. Panel-ready appliances blend in, keeping the larger surfaces uninterrupted.

Together, the curved forms, natural materials, and integrated appliances make the kitchen feel softer and more relaxed, while preserving the simplicity of the original idea.

The curved island improves movement through the room and makes the centre feel less rigid. It also creates space for cooking, seating and conversation without breaking up the layout.⁠
