Today is 18 years celebrating this day August 16, 2007 ….This day shifted my world, my perspective, how I process fear, the unknown, responsibility and vulnerability, This day changed what I knew about bravery because being a mom means being brave.
On this day I felt love and gave love on a level that I didn’t know existed. In perfect Devan form he arrived a day late from his due date cool as cucumber, August 16, 2007.
I once read “You will spend the majority of your life knowing your children as adults, but for a brief moment you will get the chance to know them as children.” God willing I hope this is true and, no doubt, I am grateful and cherish all my moments as Devan as a child…it’s all a blur, yet so crystal clear.
Devan, you were an easy going, smart, kind, smiley kid who liked hanging out with your friends, but could sit alone for hours playing with your toy cars, legos, building forts and playing the piano.
You have always had a quiet confidence about how you see yourself in this world. A lot has changed over the years, but the core of who you are Devan is the same. Devan you’ve always been a “stand-up” kind of guy. You lead with humility and loyalty. You’re genuine, trustworthy and you care about doing the right thing. You care about people and how they feel. Your smile lights up any room and your kind eyes puts people at ease to be themselves. You have many talents, but that’s one of your superpowers.
Continue to be the “stand-up” kind of guy Devan - a person with steady integrity, who helps others and who others can rely on. Your strong sense of character will continue to lead you to great places with great people to do great things that will bring you happiness and meaning. Never be afraid to stand up and be counted. It’s your time. Take chances. Give it all you have. ‘Own every second that this world gives.’ Go get it.
Happy 18th Birthday, Devan!
Love,
Mom
