Some reviews mean a little more. 🤎

We received this review recently, and then the customer sent us a private note. She asked us not to use her name and admitted that she really doesn’t like leaving reviews—but she did want us to share how she felt about her experience with North Rim.

That meant a lot to us.

Buying a custom piece of furniture online requires a certain amount of trust. Many of our customers have never met us in person when they place an order. They’re trusting us with a significant purchase and, often, with a piece we’re creating specifically for their home.

We never want to take that for granted.

So when someone who isn’t comfortable putting herself out there online makes a point of saying, “I’m glad I bought it, and I’d order from you again,” we listen.

We’re putting down new roots! 🌿

North Rim Furniture is moving into a new workshop in Orland, CA—just 20 minutes north of Chico and right off I-5 on Commerce Lane.

Right now, it’s still a pretty empty space. We have tools to move, work areas to set up, and plenty to do before it really feels like North Rim. But we’re excited about what this new chapter makes possible.

We’ll also be right next door to Hardwood Creations, an established cabinet shop we’re excited to collaborate with. This partnership will allow us to expand what we can offer—from our handcrafted furniture and hall trees to custom cabinetry, built-ins, kitchen islands, dining tables, mudrooms, storage solutions and more.

While our workshop has a new address, our roots remain in the Chico community that helped North Rim grow. Our new location simply gives us more room to build—and a convenient spot along I-5 for customers coming from Chico, Redding, Sacramento and throughout Northern California.

We’re looking forward to making this space our own, and we’ll bring you along as it takes shape.

Behind the Build — Reading the Grain

Before the first cut is made, there's a little homework to do.

Every slab is different. We take time to study the direction and movement of the grain, knots and other natural features, the live edge, and the dimensions needed for the finished piece.
All of those details help determine how we lay out our cuts—preserving the character of the wood while making the best use of each unique slab.

It's one of those quiet steps in furniture making that most people never see. The measuring, studying, and planning may not be as exciting as making the first cut, but the decisions made here help shape everything that follows.

The craftsmanship begins before the saw ever touches the wood.

The Grain Tells the Story

Last week, we shared how every tree has a story. This week, we're taking a closer look at where part of that story remains—in the grain.

Look closely at this walnut slab and you'll see the grain flowing and changing as it moves around the knots. Those knots mark places where branches once grew, leaving a lasting record within the wood.

It's one of the things we love about working with solid hardwood. The variations, knots, and changing grain aren't something we need to hide—they're part of what gives each piece its individual character.

Nature created the pattern. Our job is to decide how best to showcase it.

Next time you look at a piece of solid wood furniture, take a closer look at the grain. You might just see a little of the tree's story still there.

Bringing Wood to Life

One of the most rewarding moments in the shop is applying the finish. It's the moment when the wood truly comes alive.

The rich grain, natural color, and unique character that have been there all along suddenly reveal themselves.

We believe a finish should complement the wood—not compete with it. That's why we often use Atomic Finishes Wood Oil, made right here in Northern California by Bidwell Wood & Iron. It enhances the richness of the grain while preserving the authentic character of each piece.

Every coat is hand-applied and carefully buffed by hand, creating a beautiful, durable finish that's designed to be enjoyed for years to come.

It's one of those details many people never see, but it's an important part of creating furniture that's built to last and made to love.

Even after a tree has been transformed into a beautiful piece of furniture, it continues to respond to its environment. As humidity changes throughout the year, wood naturally expands and contracts across the grain.

That's why quality craftsmanship isn't about preventing movement—it's about designing for it.

Every joint, fastener, and construction method we choose is carefully considered to allow the wood to do what it was created to do while ensuring your furniture remains beautiful and functional for years to come.

It's one of the many reasons handcrafted solid wood furniture differs from mass-produced furniture. The details you never see are often the ones that matter most.

📦 Tuesday's Tidbit: Shipping Day!

Today we're sending another handcrafted hall tree off to its new home.

Before a piece leaves our shop, it's carefully inspected, wrapped, protected, and secured for the journey ahead. While the building process gets most of the attention, proper packaging is just as important. We want every piece to arrive looking exactly as it did when it left our workshop.

Fun Fact: Most of our larger furniture pieces travel via LTL freight on custom pallets and can journey hundreds—or even thousands—of miles before reaching their new home. 🚛

Safe travels, little hall tree. We can't wait to see it in its new space! 🌲✨
