In Lincoln, you can trade the peak foliage traffic for a seat on a vintage train and let the colorful trees of the White Mountains roll past the window instead.

Granite State Railwayβs Lincoln excursion is the kind of fall outing that does not need to take over the whole day.
For about an hour, the train leaves downtown Lincoln and follows the Pemigewasset River through forest and mountain scenery, giving you a chance to watch autumn unfold without worrying about traffic, parking, or finding the next overlook.
You settle into a classic railcar, the train pulls away, and the pace changes.
Outside the windows, the river appears between the trees. Mountain slopes rise beyond the tracks. Gold, orange, red, and deep evergreen begin layering across the landscape.
Inside, there is nothing much to do except talk, look out the window, take photos, and enjoy the sound of the rails.
And that simplicity is part of what makes it work.
This is not an all-day rail adventure. It is an easy White Mountains add-on that can fit beautifully with lunch in Lincoln, a Kancamagus Highway drive, Franconia Notch, or another fall stop nearby.
One hour on the train. The rest of the day is still yours.
And after enough October weekends spent staring at brake lights or circling crowded parking lots, there is something especially nice about letting the train do the driving for a while.
