With hotter weather and longer summers becoming more common, the traditional bonsai care calendar can sometimes stretch a little further. Depending on your tree, its health, and your local growing conditions, there may still be time for summer defoliation on maples and select broadleaf bonsai.

✂️ Why Summer Defoliation?

When performed on a healthy, actively growing tree, defoliation can help
encourage:
🍃 Smaller, more refined foliage
🌱 Fresh new growth
🌳 Increased ramification and finer branching
☀️ Better light pe*******on into the interior canopy

Before you defoliate: Always consider the health and vigor of your tree. Avoid defoliating weak, recently repotted, or stressed bonsai, and be especially mindful during periods of extreme heat.

For some trees, partial defoliation may be a better option than removing all the foliage. As summer continues, now is a great time to evaluate your maples and broadleaf bonsai and finish up seasonal refinement work while conditions still allow.

🌿 Every tree is different—work with the tree, its growth, and your local climate rather than the calendar alone.

August is here, which means we’re wrapping up Japanese Black Pine candle cutting for the season.

Candle cutting is typically performed during the warmer months, June through August, while the tree is actively growing and sap is moving. This important bonsai technique helps manage growth, encourage shorter needles, improve ramification, and maintain a more refined, balanced canopy.

If you still have Black Pines waiting for their seasonal work, now is the time to finish up those final candles!

🌿 Seasonal Tip: Needle and bud selection are generally saved for the dormant season, when you can evaluate the tree’s growth and prepare it for the season ahead.

Good bonsai development is all about doing the right work at the right time. 🌲✂️

🌿Whether you're just getting started with bonsai or have years of experience, our Community Study Group is the perfect place to learn, share, and grow alongside fellow enthusiasts.

🌱 Bring your own bonsai for advice and hands-on guidance, or simply observe others working to gather inspiration and new techniques. We recommend bringing your own tools, wire, and a raw material tree to work on if you have one. Jason will be available throughout the session to answer questions and provide personalized guidance.

What an incredible weekend at Anime Expo 2026!
